OPERATIONS IN OHINEMUBI.
ENGINEER’S REPORT FOR MONTH. Mr L. E. Shaw, acting-engineer to the- Ohinemuri County Council, reported to the council meeting yesterday on the. work of the month as follows :— KAIMANAWA RIDING. . “All roads in this riding a r e requiring met’il, and will receive attention a.= soon a.s crushing operations can proceed at Komata Creek. Repairs have been carried out to two bridges on Settlement Road- On the Maratoto -Mine road several slips and washouts ■ have occurred. The slips have been cleared op-ly sufficiently to allow traf- ■ fie to pass,, but will be .attended to at tiie first opportunity. A considerable amount of damage; has be®n done to the Komata-Maratoto road by the recent flood, and it has been necessary to employ two extra 'men to clear slips, shift trees, and repair washouts. WAIHI RIDING. “Considerable damage was caused during the: recent storm, several fillings and bridges having been damaged'. Old Taurang.a Road, has been completely blocked on account of t-lie bridge over Mangakirikiri Stream having .had the foundations, washed out. Repairs capnot be carried out until such time as the:, wateuv level in the creek subsides. The material for repair® is on the ground.' All metal roads are in good cinder. PAEROA RIDING. “Maintenance as usual has been, carried out. All metal roads are in fair ordieir. Hubbard’s Road has: been I patched, but still requires a Utte more, metal. The Komata Reefs road also suffered from the effects of the, storm, washouts occurring in two places, but repairs have been carried out Two wooden culverts requ.ifib to be replaced by concrete pipes. WAIKINO RIDING. “The metalling, of the soft portions of the Waitawheta ro.a,di at Cox’s Hill was proceeding satisfactorily, but the . work was stopped on account of the heavy rain making the formation unfit for. carting. Every opportunity will be taken to have this section of •road put in- good repair. AU roadfa in ■this riding have been .affected by the recept weather, and the water, supply dam at Waikino will require cleaning out., as it is about three-parts full of gravel brought down, by the flbodt waters. KAR’ANGAHAKE RIDING. “The old wooden .bridge k-npwn as the Crown bridge, on the Scotchman’s • Gully road, has been fie,placed by a completely new structure. Repairs have been made to the swing bridge over the Ohinemuri River. Timber for repairs to the railway bridge is on the ground' and the work is proceeding. WAITEKAURI RIDING. “On the Golden • Cross road a slip has occurred, but temporary .repairs have been, cari’ied out and the road is now safe for traffic. Wooden culverts have been washed' out an two places and will be replaced with concrete pipes. The metal formation on the. Waikino-Waitekauri Hoad has A been badly washed in places and will requirfe fine surfacing metal. MANGAITI RIDING. “On; the Snakey Bend portion of the Old Te Aroha road a slip hajS occurred, but. as the settlers have access to the' main road along Station Roa.d this earth has not been removed, and as tenders are to be called at a,n early date for the starightening of this road it will -not be necessary to have this slip removed. MAIN HIGHWGAYS. “All main highways have receivedusual maintenance. The PokfenoWaihi road has in many places been very much scou'rfed by the floodwaters. . On the Paeroa-Kopu road near, thl e Paeroa Borough boundary there is a 3ft concrete culvert which it will b'e necessary to supplement with a 2ft culvert to act as an overflow. The culvert at present cannot cope with the water during heavy rains, an.fi on several occasions, the .water has passed i over the- road and considerably damaged the metal formation. PAEROA WATER SUPPLY.
“During the recent storm the water supply was tehipoiiarjly cut off, this being caused by the heavy volume of water in the supply creek bringing down debris apd blocking; the intake. Steps were taken tto get the supply going as soon as possible’.
