MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.

ROUTINE BUSINESS.

The monthly meeting of the Ohinemtui County Council was held yesterday afternoon, the ci airman (Or. H.,

M. Corbett) presiding over Crs. C. Mason. W. F. Johnstone, F. C. Hubbard, J. B. Morris. C. Hancfe, R. RMorrison, A. R. Robinson, C. E. Mac?, and Messrs R. W. Evans (clerk) and L. E. Shaw (acting-engineer). RAILWAY CROSSING. The Waihi branch of the N.Z. Fanners’ Union wrote drawing attention to the dangerous approach to the railway crossing at Waikino leading to Waitekauri. It was suggested that the signal on the railway could be moved to a position where; it could better be seen. As a postscript the secretary wrote: “We also suggest that your council do all in its power to bring about rat-. :ng on the unimproved value.” With reference to the: former portion of the letter, it was decided to forward the same to the Railway Department, with the council’s support. Conccrrfing the quest.iop of rating, the chairman said that a petition, was on foot, and when it was presented to the council and iva,s in order a poll would have to be. taken. CLOSING OF ROAD. The Lands and Survey Office. Auckland, writing-in connection, vith a sec.tion C.L. block 8. Ohinemuri survey district, 523 acres, advised that an application for a Haura,ki pastoral license thereover had been, made by Mrs J. Scobie. Waihi. but before a plan could be compiled of the area it would be necessary for a road shown on the plan to be closed. The clerk explained that the road referred to was the old one over the hill which had n.ow been replaced by Bjerringfs deviation. There was apparently no reason why the road should not be closed. The closing of the road was consented to by the. council. WAITAWHETA ROAD. The Public Works Department’s resident engineer wrote stating that when a deputation waited on the Minister of Public Works at Paeroa in con;ne®tion with the Waila,wheta road it was stated that though it would not be wise to rate the district too heavily, the settlers were willing to help in the case as much as possible. The department desired to know if that assistance, was likely to be forthcoming. The clerk said hie had replied to the effect that the council was not aware of a.ny such suggestion having, been made. MAIN HIGHWAY.. Writing in connection with the Pokeno-Waihi majn highway througJi the county, the resident Public Wotks Department engineer - stated that the Main Highways Board had considered the offer made by the council to contribute the. sum of £B5 a mile per annum over a length of eleven miles on condition that the board' took over the road for maintenance for a period of five years. The total payment by the council to the board would, be £935 per annum. The board had accepted’ the offer as from August 1, MINING RENTS. The Receiver of Gold Revenue, Paeroa, wrote advising that in response to rent notices forwarded to the Majestic Gold Mining Co.. Maratoto, in respect of rent owing on their special quartz claims, the manager of the company, writing on behalf of the debentureholders, stated : “I regret to inform you that even if the debenture-hold-ers were liable for the rent on the : special claims, they have no funds in: han,d to pay it. Legal advice hasshown that the debenture-holders are not liable for the company’s; debts.”’

Continuing, the Receiver of Gold Revenue advised that he had' forwarded a copy of the company’s letter td the Under-Secretary for Mines, and following on his instructions application was made to .write off arrears of ren,t amounting to £llO Ils 3d. It was decided to write off tlie amount as set out. GRANT TO LIBRARY. The secretary. Ohinemuri Public Library, wrote asking for a grant, towards the maintenance costs of the institution. The' sum of £5 5s was voted. A SUBSIDY SOUGHT. An application w.as received fihrnn Mr C. G. Kennedy, Paeroa. for ai subsidy towards the cleaning of the: inaad drain fronting his property oi\ Puke Road from the borough boundary to Tawa Stre.a.m, a distance ‘of 24% chains, tire, work -to be completed at a cost of 10s a chain. It was deqjjgd to assist the applicant to the, extent of £2. KARANGAHAKE SCHOOL ROAD. A petition, signed by six ratepayers at Karangahake, asked that thehoad leading from the main road near the public hall to School Hill, a distance of about two cha.iiis, should be drained, formed up, and metalled, so as to allow tradesmen and others to reach the residences. On the. motion of Cr. Morris the matter w-as referred to the engineer for immediate attention. ACCESS REQUIRED. Mr R. Baxter, Waihi, wrote advisihK that he had purchased a property- on Trigg Road, and lie asked that access be given to Iris property. The engineer was instructed to inspect and report on the matter to the next meeting. CREAM STANDS. An application was received from the. N.Z. Dairy Co. for permission to erect two small cream stands between Waihi and Paeroa. Permission was granted subject to the approval of the Public Works Department. - ERECTION OF FENCE. Mrs E. Smeaton, Waihi, wrote asking for permission to fence her property to the road’s edge, so that land might be cultivated and npxiousi weed's checked.

The chairman said that the council could not give permission to fence on., the road.
