MR. SAMUEL ON WAIHI BEACH,
Familiar ground was covered in a lengthy debate on the presentation of the annual report of the Tounist and Health Department in the House of Reprcsenjtatives last, week-end, the majority of th& speakers; taking the opportunity to ure.e upon the Govern- 1 ment the necessity of exploiting the tecnic potentialities of their own districts. Congratulations - were extended to the department for its efforts to advertise. New Zealand abroad, and the.hope was expressed by seivera.l Labour members that facilities would He. given the workers to enable trem to see more of their own country. The purchase of the steamer Maili Pomarewas ifavourably coinmeiiited upon. Proceedings were enlivened when Mr A. M. Samuel (Ohinemuri) was extolling the scenic .attractions of theWaihi Beach, his remarks prompting Mr W. E. Parry (Auckland Central) to ask, “Where is this place you ar e talking about ?” “Thfe hon. member; knows Waihi very well,” replied Mr Samuel. “He has worked in th© mines; there, and .no doubt ha,s plfearant memories of those days.” (Loud laughten.) The 'member for Ohinemuri again scored later at the expense of Mr A. Harris (Waitemata). In very vivid and picturesque language he. was describing the beauties of >his own district, when Mr Harris asked him if he was ife-adin.g from a Tourist Department; pamphlet. “No,” was the retort, “but that is what should' be in it.”
