Mr William James; Tayloil, of Tuakau, 'has announced that he will stand as an, independent candidate for th© Thames seat. Miii Taylor was born at Thames. He saw service in the South African War, and also in tiie police force;. He has had eight years of local body work.
As from to-ilay the -Main Highways Boa.rd takes over that portion of the main, Waihi-Pokeno road from the Ngahina bridge; at th|e ; Puke to Waihi, excluding, the portion which is in the Borough of Paeroa. This highway, which is in a bad state- of disrepair at present, is to be reconstructie-d and maintained to the standard laid down by the Main Highways Board for a period of five yFars from to-day.
An appeal for clothing of all kinds, particularly for, children;,, is made by the officer ;n charge of the local Salvation Army, ag deserving cases in the borough have been brought to his notice during the past few days. Gifts may be left, at the Salvation Auny Hall between 2 p.m. anil 5 p.m., on at No. 10, Miller Avenue.
Nominations for seats on the directorate of the N.Z. Go-oplerativc; Dairy Company closed on Monday evening. The four of tiie 12 directors to retire by rotation are Mersrs R. li. McKenzie (Northern electoral district), J. H. doling (scuth-western.), J. T. Bryant (south-eastern), and W. E. Hale (Hauraki Plains Ward of the Thames-Val-ley electoral district). ‘Messrs.McKenzie, Young, and Bryant were returned unopposed. In the Hauraki Ward there, are three nomination!': Messrs W. E. Hale (Turua), E. P. R. Henry (Turua). and J. W. Neate- (Ngatea). The election will take place two days before the annual infecting on August 22.
In rfe-g.ard to the recent undertaking between ?he Ohinemuri County Council and the Main Highways Board for the reconstruction and maintenance by the latter body of the main WaihiPaeroa road, the; Mayor of WJihi, Mr" 'W. .M. Wallnutt, has expressed the opinion that as thfe Waihi Borough Council is a contributor to the maintenance cost of the road the council should have been consulted in the matter. At least, said His WoUsluip, the borough is entitled to have a quota of its uncmployled on the work, and with th.a,t end in view he communicated with Mu -A. M. Samuel, member for the district. Mr Samuel replied stating that he had placed the before the Minister of public Wohks, who had promised to look into it immediately.
■Mr D. iMolesworth, postmaster; at Wa'ltakamrru, has received notice of an impending tii'ansfer to Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. He will be; greatly missed in Waitakai'uini, particularly by the football and ten,nis clubs, of which he was an executive officer and a “star?’ player, and by the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union’s representative team, in which he- had a sure place had he been, available to play. He was so wcll-kn;own as a scoring man that he wa.s always well marked, with the result that lie was frequently injured.
The Hauraki Plains Rugby Union’s insurance fund will’be hard hit as a result of the two matches in the Dent Cup knock-out eompqtition. In the first match M. Madgwick had a bone bnoken in his ankle, necessitating hospital trfe-atmSnt, and* in the second match three Waitakaruru players and one Turua player were injured. F. Scott, of Turua, and C. Wilton, of Waitakaruru, received injuries to arms, and J. Dobbs, of Waitakaruru, had his thumb dislocated, while D. Molesworth. of Waitakaruru, received slight, concussion of the brain.
To-morrow ithe monthly sitting of tiie Magistrate’s Court, the monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri Count}' Council, and a sitting of the-' Assessment Court will be held at Paeroa.
