PAEROA RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The management committee of the Paeroa Rugby Union 'held 1 its weekly meeting on Monday night, the chairman (Mr W. P. Fennell) presiding over Father Taylor and Messrs J. Pinder. E. P. Fathers. L. E. Shaw, and rl. Tams. POLAND CUP COMPETITION. A letter was received from the, Thames Valley Union advi'ing the dates of the* matches for. the second round of t'hc; Frank Poland Memorial ’Cup competition. Advice was also received to’the effect that it was-'pro-posed to have an A and’ B match at Paeroa on September 8, when the selectors could make the final selection. for, the Auckland, Taranaki, and Waikato matches, .which were to take place on September 15, 19, apd 22. The Taranaki match would probably be played alt Te Aroha on Wednesday, September 19. Mr Tams said it appeared as if Paeroa was not going to ha,vc a representative' match this season. The chairman said that, he could not answer the query definitely.

Air Pinder contended that Paeroa, was still being penalised by the action. of the Thames Valley Union’s delegate to the N.Z. Rugby Union. He considered that a satisfactory gate could be obtained from a Wednesday’s match at Paeroa, provided it was .well organised. Paeroa was well served by buses and trains from all parts of the district. He was not advocating any steps being, taken, but he wished to voice his protesjl Mr Shaw thought th.at Paeroa- was not getting a fair deal so fan as a representative match was concerned. The town was a natural centre and should be considered.

Father Taylor stated that he thought it would be hopeless from a financial point of view to play a nepffiesentative match at Paeroa on a. Wednesday.' However, he thought that the union should protest at the action, of the Thames Valley Union’s delegate. It would be a waste of time writing to the N.Z. Rugby Union in connection with fixtures, ,a.nd it would be far better to get at the spiiirce of the trouble. He moved that the union record its protest against the attitude of the delegate in regard to representative fixtures this season. Seconded by Mr; Tams and carried. A PLAYER’S COMPLAINT.

The following letter was received from J. Verran, a West Club senior player;— “I have to make a complaint against the senior represtentative selector, Mr White, on the occasion of the visit of the Paeroa team to Thames. On the Thursday previous to the day in question Mr White came to m'e and gave me to unders|tand that I would be second emergency to Boyer for the trip. As McQuarters and Smart were' absent Boyer, played, a.nd I maintain? I had next consideration. Air White ignored me and played Maloney, who was not an, emergency. He,- gave no explanation, nor has he done* so since. As 1 was good enough to oblige him, why was he not straightforward enough to fexplain things at the time, and I would have stood down without demur. Has not your union power to demand an explanation 7” \ .

Father Taylor thought that Verran was entitled to an explanation if the circumstances were as sta.te-1. In answer to the chairman, Verran, who was present as a club delegate, admitted that the selector had not said definitely that he would! be second! emergency. After some discussion Father Taylor moved that Mr White be written to and .a,ske,d -for an explanaton. Seconded by Mr Tams.

In, speaking to his resolution Father, Taylor sa.id. that if the re was any suggestion of partiality or impartiality on the part of the selector the matter should be brought under the notice of the union, otherwise football would be ruined. The resolution was carried. THIRD-GRADE MATCH.

On the motion of the chairman it was decided! to accept the offer of the Pliako Union to send a third-grade team to play a curtain-raiseir at Paeroa on Saturday nfext, the match to be played on the No. 2 ground and to commence at 2 p.m. The manager appointed was Mr C. H. Vincent, and the matter of entertaining the team was, left -in his hands. NORTH ISLAND TEAM.

The chairman said that he had been surprised to learn that n|o Paeroa players had been included in the North Island B te.a,m. In the opinion of Mr Pinder there were too many selectors- in the Thames Valley Union, and this view was endorsed by several other speakers. After an leng.thy discussion it was moved that ip view of the fact that the North Island team had been selected and Paeroa had been left out of the limelight altogether, the local selector be interviewed with regard to nominating Paeroa players. REINSTATEMENT. The question was by Mr Pinder if the union had received advice of the reinstatement from League to Rugby of the West, players Lewis and Dudley. He wished to haye the information, before the final match was played. It was resolved to apply to the Thames Valley Union for the information. BENEFIT MATCH. In referring to the proceeds of Charity Saturday being handed to the Robinson, benefit fund Mr; Tams said that, past experience had shown that the receipts from the recogn'ised charity Saturdays had amounted to very little. He moved that the gate receipts .from the West v. Suburbs match on August 11 be handed to the Robinson fund. The chairman said that later on two friendly society matches were to be played, and it had been suggested’ that that day should bfe aside for the fund.

Mr Tams contended t-liat the gate

receipts woulff uot be as large as those received at the final match i u the senior competition. As an amendment Father Taylor moved that the matter be left in the hands of t-he chairman and Messrs Tams and Pinder, with power to actMr Pin.der thought tha.t giving a competition fixture to charity wouldcreate an unwise precedent; but at the same time be realised that the union should assist the fund. Mr Shaw considered that the final game in the knock-out competition would dra.w a good gate, aim he suggested that the proceeds of thaL match might be handed to the fund/ Father. Taylor, explained that the reason for moving the amendment was because of the importance of the. matter to the Robinson family as well as to -the union. To be made a financial success it would require careful consideration and organisation. The- resolution moved by Mr Tam s lapsed for want of a seconder, and the amendment was carried. INJURY TO PLAYERThe chairman reported that during the placing of the Thames v. Paeroa junior, match at Thames last Saturday a Paeroa player. E. of H'ikutaia, had been badly injured and was taken to the Thames Hospital by the chairman of ~the Thames Union, Mi - J, W. Arbury, who had also undertaken to visit the patient daily. It was resolved to thank Mr Ar.bury for his action and to accord the local union’s -appreciation of the hospitality extended to the team by Thames. CONTROL OF CROWD. ReferOn.ee was made by Father Taylor. to the “Donnybrook” occurred during, the playing of the- West v. East match on Saturday last when the crowd continually surged! ovOr the line on to the playing field. As a member of the union he had made- an honest endeavour, to keep the ebowd back, but had received a rebuff for his efforts. Mr Pinder, said that he, too, had don,e his best to control the crowd, but had been roundly ;a,bused. On the motion of the chairman it was resolved that the matter of fencing off the No. 2 ground be-Jeft in th© hands of Father Taylor Mr. Pin- ■ de?’, with power to act. GENERAL. The gate receipts for last Saturday were reported to be £7. The question of managing and entertaining the Haunaki Plains team on Saturday next was left in the hands of Mr Crosby. POLAND CUP MATCH.
