Fixtures under the auspices of the Paeroa Rugby Union we’to- continued on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, with sunshine a,nd a light south-easterly breeze prevailing. The playing fields idqto in good order, but the ground was damp and heayy in patches. The large crowd of spectators was treated to an intetosting period of play, but the' standard was not of a very high order, particularly in the two senior ga,mes. This fact can b© largely attributed to the fact that. a number of the players have not. had a game for many weeks. The senior matches, Suburbs v. Pirates on the No. 1 ground find East v. West on No. 2 ground, saw the teams take the field weakened in strength either by the illness of players or, as in the case of the Pirates team, s'e-.veral players short. Probably the greatest interest was taken in the. East v. West match, which resulted in a victory to the last-named ( team by 22 points to three. The’pirates team, which fielded only 12 men during the first half, suffered defeat by Suburbs to tine tube of .29 points to 3. EAST V. WEST. Th© following were, the teams: — East. —W. Latimer, G. West won the toss and E. Mooiie kicked off, after which play hung round in, midfield for some time. In a forward) rush by West Taylor was penalised, and the alvantage to East carried play into West’s twenty-five, where Southby got. offside, E. Moor® made a good kick but failed to score. From the; loose' Sw,a,nn; started a passing rush and seift to Nield, to Masters,, when Latimer intercepted the latter’s pass and cleared to the line. From the Hue/out H. -Moore received and made a greqt dash, covering nearly the length of the field before he short-punted for Fraser tb clear. Give and take play followed for some time, until just at th,e en,'d of tne quarter an East forward committed a breach and enabled Taylor to kick a gaotl goal West 3, East 0. Masters kicked off after, the changeover, the- ball going out near half-way. The West backs ‘got moving from the throw-in .and the, ball travelled across the field, ending in tight, play from which La tinier forced. The; West forwards again pressed until Tukukijio broke through. He was soundly collared by Swamii;, who gained possession and passed to McQuatters, Who made a good nun but lost the ball near the corner. Carrick sent Masters a.way from the line-out, each of the backs handled the ball j n turr., before Masters again obtained pcss'ess'ion an,d crossed the lin§. YXcylcr failed with the* kick. West 6> East 0 Poland dribbled up to East's’ twentyfive, and after tight plav Latimer forced. A forward rush, beaded bv G. Neil, reached West’s territory, where a five-yards scrum gave the attackers the advantage and Nealie- opened East’s account with a nippy try. E. Moore failed to convert. West 6 East 3. ’ '
On resuming after half-time the kick-out went to Taylor, w fc o opened up an attack for Masters to score in the corner. Taylor failed to convert. West 9. East 3. Fitch and Wilton dribbled into West’s twenty-five tor Fra: er to clear. Southby. led: a forward rush which terminated in Masters again crossing the line. Swann converted. West 14, East 3. The two Neils beaded an! East attack, but the defence w,as sound. • . .
The final qutarer opened with West hard on the attack, which culminated in McQuarters making a swerving r>un to score a good try. Swann failed with the kick. West 17,■ Ea ; t 3. Sweeney broke away ami sent to Masters, who took the ball offside: and the kick brought relief. A lengthy period of midfield play terminated in Sweeney breaking away and sending to Taylor, who dived over the,- line. Swann converted with a good kick. 'West 22, East 3.
