Correspondence was read with reference to the proposed excursion on Saturday. 1 The chairman reported that there would be about 60 footballers travelling to Tauranga, and also the ladies’ hockey team.

After some discussion it was resolved to provide a hot mid-day meal for the footballers and. hockey team, and that players make their owp arrangements for a mea.l prior to returning in, the evening. '

THAMES VALLEY MEETING.

Referring, to the application requesting the Thames Valley Union tocall a special meeting for the purpose of dealing with the three Karangahake players jvho were playing under the Waihi Union,, the chairman explained that the application was,'out of order. However, the president and secretary, had taken the .matter up with Mr,S. J. Walmsley, president of the Waihi Union, an.d an assurance had been given that the playeus concerned would not again play under the Waihi Union. TRAINING OF TEAMS. ’ The chairman drew attention to the apathy of members, of the senior representative team to assemble for training. Last week two coaches had gone along to the Drill Hall, but. only four, forwards turned up. The nonattendance of the players when requested, to attend was discouraging and discourteous to the selector and coaches,j and against the best interests of the team.

Mr Fathers mentioned that in many places players who did! not turn up f°t practices lost their positions in the team.

The chairman said that arrangements had been qja.de for the use of the Drill Hail for to-night, .and i fc wag hoped there would be a full attendance of players. JOHNSTON CUP.

It ,was decided to accept July 28 at the date for a junior representative team to play at Thames for the Johnston Cup. LACK OF GAMES.

Father Taylor referred to the letter which had appeared in Monday’s issue of the “Gazette” relative to the complaint of lack of club matches. - Mr Crosby pointed ou that the union had arranged for Pirates and East, to play West and Suburbs, but the teams had failed to take the field. In his opinion the seniors did not want a

The ehairman agreed, and said'ithat there were no grounds for complaint against, the union. It could not do more than arrange and advertise the fixture. If the players failed to take the field the union could. , not be blamed. On tihe Saturday in question, the referee was actually waiting on the ground fon the teams. PLAYING FIELDS. Attention was d>‘awn by Father Taylor to the fact that on Saturday afternoon last the senior game was 20 minutes late in starting,. Both teams were' ready, but. they could not. take the field on account of a. schoolboys’ match being played, on. the field. In his opinion such a position should not arise, when the schoolboys, could just as easily have played on the No. 2 ground. The chai'.man said that a mista.ke 1 had been made, and on his motion it was resolved to reserve the No. 1 ground for all senior matches in future, ASSEMBLING OF TEAM. Mr Tams drew attention to the dilatory way in whi jli members of the local senior team as enabled. He said that on Saturday la.st it was nearly 3 p.m. before some of the players arr’ved at the dressing-shed. As a consequence they did not have sufficient time to change and take* the field on schedule l time. Also, the selector did not have an opportunity of putting the team through its paces before it went on the field. The. speaker moved that players in future be requested to assemble at the dressingyshed not later than 2-30 p.m. Seconded by Mr Crosby and carried. general An application from H. Cbldicutt for a clearance from the Pirates to the Kerepeehi club on account of change of residence was granted. The treasurer reported that the gate

receipts at Paeroa on Saturday amounted to £l2 Is 6d. A letter was received from Mr HRobinson, Waikato Hospital, thanking the union for its resolution of sympathy ,and good wishes. A complaint was voiced by Father Taylor at the late hour of commencing the committee- meetings, and it was decided to meet promptly at 8 p.m. in future.

THAMES VALLEY ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual general meeting o£ the Thames Valley Primary schools’ Rugbv Union was held at Pa,eioa on Saturday morning, Mr G. H. Taylor (Paeroa) presiding over Messi's D. McPherson, W. A. Cole, F. A. Long, P. Stace (all of Waihi), R. C. Abel (Ngatea), A. C. Percy, T. W. Aickin, A. RMerrington (Te Aroha), E. Turner, (Hikutaia.), T. R. Rice (Netherton,), F. R. S. Bullen (Waiihou), J. W. Silcock (president T.V. Rugby Union), D. s Ker-r (secretary Paeroa Rugby Union), and J- E. Insley, secretary (Paeroa).

The cha/rman extended a hearty welcome to the delegates and vlisitors, and said, that such a representative’attendance from the schools of the diS" trict. showed clearly the iiitei'est that was being taken in school football. In extending a special welcome to- Mr Abel the chairman said he hoped that the teachers on the Haurajti Plains would see- their way to allow thefir schools to join up with the Thames Valley Association this season. There was no doubt that there were good players on the Plains, and l by .affilia.tr ing with the association an opportunity would be afforded for players- to be selected in th.e Northern Roller Mill® Shield team.

In acknowledging the welcome M'r Abel detailed the difficulties of travelling experienced on the Plains on account of the schools being so scattered. The teachers did 1 what they could to foster school football, but their efforts; were necessarily limited. Ho.wdver, on his return he would endeavour to arrange for, a conference of -tire teachers for the purpose of considering ways and means, of joining the association and taking part hi the Fleming Shield matches at le'as.f.

ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report stated : —

“Inter,-Union Matches.— (Fleming Shield).—The inter-union matches proved interesting, the competition having to go to two. rounds. Waihi travelled to Te Aroha ;and was defeated. Paeroa defeated Piako at Paeroa, and was defeated' by at Waihi. This left the tea.ms even, and further matches were necessary. Waihi defeated Paeroa at Paeroa and then defeated P'ako at Wdihi. Waihi thus won the competition.

“Northern Roller Mills, Shield.—The Thames Valley representative team went to Hamilton to defend the against teams from Waikato, King Country, and three teams' from Auckland, and was successful in retaining the sh’eld. It will Joe necessary at the annual meeting to come to s<ome definite decision about the centre for this year’s competition. “The committee' regrets to- notify that the president of the union, Mr J. Elliot, has left the district.” The balance-sheet showed -a credit balance of 9s 3d.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the ch,a;ir.man pointed out that the association’s total revenue last- season amounted; to only £1 Us 6d—such was the interest taken in school football. The pubII could do a greatt deal more towards encouraging and fostering the game, and it. should be borne in mind that the' schoolboy of to-day was the senior player of to-mortow. LOCATION OF COMPETITION. Considerable correspondence was Head relating to the negotiations made with the Auckland Primary Schools’ Uniion as; to the most suitable centre ■a.t which’to hold the Northern Roller. Mills Shield competition this season. The chairman said he' was of the opinion that in the interests of the boys from the country the competition. should be held at Auckland-

Mr Aickin said that! it had been hoped th hold the competition at Te Aroha this year, but the Piako Rugby Union was not in a fina.h|Cial position to entertain the visiting teams. A difficulty 'would also 'arise whep it .came to billeting the boys. Similar views were expressed by Messrs McPherson and Kerr.

In the opinion of Mi Silcock there would be no difficulty in billeting the boys at Paeroa, but there was little to be had in the way of entertainment unless the - boys were taken through the goldfield*. He thought that the competition should be held at Auckland, as a visit to the city was educational as well as a pleasure to the country teams. The chairman, said that, the main question way one of expense. If held at Paeroa, the assistance of the Thames Valley and Paeroa unions would be necessary.

The secretary said that if the competition was held at Paeroa or Te Aroha the number of teams would greatly decrease and 1 much interest would, be lost.

After further discussion, the chairman moved that the Auckland Primary Schools’ Union be asked to control the competition at Auckland this season, and failing acceptance of the request that this union be notified before anything further was done. Seconded by Mr Merrington. Mr Aickin suggested that if it was necessary for the Thames Valley Union tot handle the eopipetition it would probably be advantageous to play one section at Paeroa and one at Te Aroha. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election, of officers resulted as follows :— President, Mr E. Turner ; vice-presi-dents, Messrs Bullen, McPherson, and G. H. Taylor ; secretary and treasurer 1 , Mr J. E. Insley ; management committee, Messrs Long, Percy, and Aicken ; selectors, Messrs E. Turner, Aickin, and McPherson ; manager of Thames Valley representative team, Mr D. McPherson.

The question of appointing a delegate from Hauraki Plains was held over.

FLEMING SHIELD MATCHES. It was decided that the Fleming Shield match be confined to one round, special provision being made for the final match. SERVICES RECOGNISED. The chairman referred to the retirement of last year’s presidents Mr J. Elliott, owing to his removal from Hikutaia to Pakuranga. In moving that Mr Elliot be written to recording the association’s thanks and appreciation of his services, the chairman said that Mr Elliot had always been an enthusiastic worker and keen supporter of school Rugby affairs, and his valuable .assistance and advice would be greatly missed. The meeting terminated with .a Vote of thanks to Mr Taylor for presiding and to Mr Bain for the use,of his meeting room.
