PAEROA-POKENO LINE.

EABY CONSTRUCTION URGED.

BOROUGH COUNCIL TAKES ACTION

At the meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council on Thursday, the, Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said that it was. with genuine regret that he had learned that the first section of the duplication of the railway from Frankton Junction to Auckland had been commeniced. It looked as if the Paeroa-Pokeno line had been left too late. He had mentioned the matter to the president of the Chamber of Commerce) several times, but the chamber had not yet. moved in the matter; The trunk system of railways could never be completed until the Paeroa-Pokeno I'ne was put. through. It looked as if th© issue had been side-stepped, and it. was a lasting pity. The Mayor then moved :

“That this council again uifge upon the Government the great importance of air early start, bqing made on tiio construction of th© Paei’oa,Pokeno Railway ; that we point out again the great economical gain of a reduction in haulage of 40 miles on the East Coast Main Trujik ; that with the preference rate to Wajhi operating on all East Coast goods such advantage would largely accrue to the Railway Department; that the present necessity to turn the enginesi ;a,t Paeroa on all outward and homei-bound trains is causing a delay of 20 minutes in Paeroa; that we point out that the local indications point to the fact that the Ea.st Coast line will quickly develop into a main trunk line, and therefore further delay in-starting to cut out the trip via Frankton would probably prove a most serious blunder in a few jr-eiai's’ time ; that this Council respectfully submits that already the matter has been too Ipng delayed if the authorjsled duplication from Fannkton north is already necessary, as th'is might .probably have been avoided for many years had' the Pae-roa-Pokeno connection been ready.’” The resolution was, carried, and it was also decided to forward a copy of the resolution to Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P.
