OPERATIONS DURING JUNE.

REPORT BY ENGINEER.

The following report was presented by the acting-engineer (Mr L. E. Shaw) to yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemurj County Cotincil: —

“Ka,imaiiawa Riding.—All the dra'ncleaning contracts in this area have been completed, with the exception of portion of the Ferny Road drain and Vedder’s Road, 'drain. These two are nearing, completion and will be finished at an early date.

“A creek crossing on Maj’atofio Road has again washed out and caused a portion of the road, to be scoured. It will be necessary to deviate at this point, but on account, of the amount of water at present in the crebik only temporary repairs ca,n be carried out “Waihi Riding.—The metalling of Pukewera Road has been suspended until conditions for carting are more suitable.

“During the month five chains of metalling was .carried out. on Crean’s Roa,d'.

“The new bridge, together with approaches, on Tierney’s Road has been completed.

“An old platform bridge on Leopold’s Road which has on several occasions been shifted out of place by flood-waters is being replaced by a new bridge at a higher level.

“Paeroa Riding.— Tenders were called for the deepening of 36 chains of the Rotokohu Road drain. Two tenders were received', and both were too high nothing has been done in the matter. Hubbard’s Road and Komata Reefs Road are receiving attention.

“Waikino Riding.—A portion of the Waitaw'heta roatj known as Cox’s Hill is getting in. a very bad 1 state, and so as to allow the .settlers to get fertilisers to their properties) it will be necessary to employ an extra workman in this riding for about two weeks, as the permanent men are employed nearly full time on the main highway. “Mangaiti Riding.—All roads in tills riding are in good order. The top road (requires approximately 50' cubic yards of watching metaj. MAIN HIGHWAYS. “Pokeno-Waihi. —Since last meeting this road has received attention, two trucks being employed carting, metal from railway trucks. An amount of approximately 200 cubic yard|s has been put on the road between Karangahake and Owharoa to date. Repairs have been carried out to the stop-bank portion on the Ngahina to Paeroa Borough boundary section. “Paeroa.-Kopu.—This road is being maintained up to a fair standard. The section, between the Hikutaia qiwry and the Thames County boundary is being ireco-niditioned. “Hamilton-Paeroa. —Metal for this roa.d is being supplied from Clarkin’s quarry, and as soon aS the machinery can be spared from the Paeroa-Kopu main highway it will go to Mangaiti to complete this work. “Traffic ha,s been blocked' during the last two days oil account. of floodwaters covering the low-lying portion of the road at Waitoki. The filling of this section will be put in hand as soon as conditions are favourable for this clfiss of work. GENERAL. “The crusher has bee;n working most of the period 1 , the metal being supplied to Thames Road. “The wire-netting ventilators and doors at the abattoirs require new netting, and it will also bq necessary to renew the brickwork of the copper. The estimated cost of these irepairs is £7 10s. “During the month estimates for the current year for, Government grants ajid main highways have beep prepared apd sent forward for approval.”
