BONELESS VEAL.
THE NATIONAL SCHEME.
MERELY A MOVE FROM LONDON.
MR. S. LYE’S QOMMENT.
(Published by arrangement.)
Commenting, on the report of the recent conference at Hajmiltoni with reference to the export of boneless veal, Mr S- Lye, chairman of diHec- . tors of tlie Waikato and Thames Valley Company, in conversation. with a Wajkato Times reporter, said it was interesting to review the history of the position. “Sensational reports have appeared in, the pres|s as regards the possibilities of the trade in young veal,” remarked Mr S. C. G, Lye. Early last season, he said, a conference was arranged between Mr Anderson’s compa,ny and! the Waikato and Thames Valley Co-operative Calf By-Products Company, Ltd. This conference broke down owing to the fact that Mr Anderson's company would not agree t.o hand this business over to the farmers as a co-operative concern, should the farmer at any time ,wis:h to take it. 'over. Mr Lye stated that his company had made two attempts during the autumn to form a big co-opera-tive company, but had been requested to hold on for another year owing, to the drought making the conditions in the Waikato a little hard. The Waikato farmers, he considered, did not require the National Dairy Associations (whose functions, were of a doubtful stability) to run their, business. Tiey were alive enough to see th© possibilities for the manufacture of gelatine,' and they would not, he thought, allow any outside organisation to filch this business. They would doubtless see the wisdom of keeping Waikato money and busiimsjs in Waikato. The whole of tihe present movement, he suggested, looked like a shrewd move by Mr. McFarlane, from London, to secure., .new business for his marketing association. Mr Lye, continuing, .said Mr. Middleton., when speaking with reference to this business at the Palmerston North Dairy Conference, was reported to have said tha.t he did not think the Prfoducers’ Association was the best body to handle the scheme, and pointed out that the business should be carried out on co-operative lines. Mr Lye said that he had been willing and anxious at all times to assist in fostering the co-operative spirit among the farmers, but he would strenuously oppose any outsider who was trying to get a strangle hold of the Waikato farmers’ business.
Mr Lye also commented that Thursday’s conference was .a very strange proceeding, as the pioneers of the “Bobby” calf trade in the Waikato were not eVen invited to attend. The managing director (Mr S. C. G. Lye) was actually refused admittance when he sought to give the meeting the benefit of his company’s operations, during the past year. Mr Anderson had quoted figures i.n connection with the Waikato business which (if he i 5 reported correctly) showed his absolute ignorance of the operations of the .Waikato concern. Mr Lye concluded! that the Waikato Farmers’ Union had a good grip of the whole business, and. had asked his company to carry -on for this season, and he assured the fartmers of South Auckland that his company would honour its promise- and hold the fort on their behalf.
(To the Editor.) Sir..—A great deal of noise 'has been made by Mr McFarlane, who is the reputed (head of the New Zealand Producers’ Marketing League. Could you inform me who this firm is, and where do they' carry on their business;. I notice a Mi* Middleton said that he did not. think they were the best body to handle this business, -Why did they lock the door against the- managingdirector of our own company? Are they afraid of the truth ? .1 think we would be well advised to stick to the company we know, and who risked their money for our benefit. We have previously heard enough about Leagues, Associations, and Trusts.— I am, etc., • ■ INTERESTED.
