A STORMY WEEK-END.
HEAVY RAIN AND WIND.
AN EASTERLY GALE. The weather locally over the weekend was particularly boisterous, and yesterday rain fey almost continuously untT a late hour. • Saturday dqwned line, ami there was a brief period of sunshine, but before mid-day a light drizzling rain commenced, and with a. falling barometer, the early afternoon saw a steady rain, which prevailed almost uuTiterruptedly until late last night. Yesterday morning the wind veered round to an almost due easterly direction, but it changed towards evening to the north-west, and very heavy rain fell.
The total rainfall for the 24 hours a.s recorded at the local office of the Public Works Department was just under two inches. The stormwater drains in the borough, were fully taxed during the day, and water covered the majority of low-lying places, but this morning the water was getting aw.ay freely, and there are only slight traces of the week-end storm. Throughout yesterday the Ohinemuri River rose steadily, and by 8 o’clock last night was running bankhigh,' having reached a height of about 17ft at’the Criterion bridge. At the Puke the Waihou River is Ip flood, anfl'at an. early hour this morning the water was within a short distance of the Ngahina, .wharf. This morning; there is several feet of water on the low-lying land between the main road and the wharf, and vehicles qre having some difficulty in getting to and from the wharf. The steadier Tanjwlia readied the Puke from Auckland at an early hour this morning. She- experienced rather a buffeting crossing the Hauraki Gulf, but once she reached Kopu a good passage was. made up the river. So far as is, known, no damage occurred locally. Telephonic c’omnitiiiications are all working satisfactorily, and so far as fe known all electric power lineis in the district have weathered' the storm.
The barometer at 10 o’clock this morning wa,s unsteady at 29.81, and before mid-day steady rain set in.
