The butcher’s shop of Mr W. G. Hayward. Ngatea, was entered’ by soine person unknown last. Saturday night, but except for some meat nothing wa.s taken. Entry was effected by breaking a h'ole in the perforated zinc door large enough to enable a hand to be admitted to draw the bolt. During the last few months numbers of swaggers have passed through the Hauraki Plains, aiul of la.te some of them have become a nuisance. Early this week ope man visited a number of farmhouses and walked inside on his hands and knees. He stated that die was too weak to walk’ ; but he showed a surprising turn of speed when threatened with a stock'whip by a settler whose wife had been thoroughly frightened. Warning of his approach wa.s telephoned along the Waftakaruru roan, and settlers in that district 'hastened his departure from the county. In connection with his visit to a house near Ngatea on Tuesday morning a farmer arrived at a meeting in very old clothes and explainedl that his children had locked tip the house and taken the key with them to school, for fear the stranger would return. The farmer could not got inside to change his clothes. Dur'ng the gale on Wednesday evening the pontoon of the Pipiroa ferry bumped' again-t the fence on the western ramp ami considerably damaged it. Repairs were effected yesterday. Mr W. M. White, the Hauraki Plains County Council’s new inspector, will take up ihs duties early next week.
