The programme of works in the borough lnj& been approved of by the Minister of Public Works, who op Monday telegraphed the Mayor of Paeroa (Mr W. Marshall) signifying his approval and advising the Mayor to confer with the resident engineer, Mr O. G. Thornton.
A telegram was ajso received by the Mayor from Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., as follows : “Minister of Public Works telegraphed me that he approves of Paeroa relief works, and, as requested by me, the minister is advising you direct."
In an interview this morning, the Mayor stated that everything was going very satisfactorily. No time had 1 been lost since the Minister’s approval was received, and a start was made with a portion of the relief works yesterday. Employment was; found for half q. dozen married) men straight away, and as the work proceeded an endeavour would be made to employ all the married unemployed men in the Paeroa district who were capable of doing the work. It would not be possible to keep these men in steady employment throughout the winter, but it was anticipated that the work would be arranged so that the married men would have something, to tide them over the worst months at least.
