PLAINS TENNIS BALL.
PREISiENTATION OF TROPHIES. FUNCTION AT TURUA. The Hauraki Plains Tenlnis Association’s sixth annual ball was held at Turua -on Wednesday evening. On account of the weather the attendance was not as large as anticipated, but the function, was undoubtedly a huge social and a fair financial success. The music was by. the Dixie Boys’ Orchestra, Mr N. Clay, was M.C, and the suppei* arrangements were in the capable hands of the'members of the Turua Tennis Club. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Early in the evening the Tennis Association’s trophies for the season were presented by Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P. He was introduced by Mr A. H. ■McClean, president of the association, who briefly outlined the progress of the association in the past six years-. It then comprised five clubs, but now nine clubs, comprising about -250 members, were affiliated. Mr -McClean pointed out that the association provided -cheaper tennis than anywhere else in. the s-province. Its tournament fees were probably the lowest in th province, and- the trophies given were equal, if not better, than those given by most associations. A glowing tribute was pafd by Mr McClean to the work of the secretary, Mr A. R. Vowles, whose enthusiasm was, undoubtedly largely responsible for the great progress of the- association. In introducing Mr Samuel bhe president remarked that such a service was quite unnecessary, as Mr Samuel was well known, both personally .and by his work.
Mr Samuel congratulated the association on its successful year and steady progress, and added his meed of praise for the work of .the secretary. Speaking of the desirability of fostering sport, Mr Samuel outlined a scheme for the- utilisation; of the money collected from racing clubs for the provision of recreation grounds in districts where there, were no racecourses,. Where tliere were racecourses the racing clubs should, b<> his scheme, be compelled to make the area inside the course available for organised sport. The trophies were then presented l .
Mr C. Scott, oil behalf of the Turu,a Club, received the Laidlaw Cup for the inter-club A grade competition, the Hayward Shield for the B grade inter-club competition, and the Howell Williams Memorial Shield, which is a district challenge trophy. Owing to the state- of the roads Miss B. Duffy could not get down from Patetoilga to receive the Hauraki Plains Gazette Cup, the trophy for the ladies’ championship single-, or the cup presented by the association for the ladies’ handicap singles) competition. Mr M. O’Connor, the winner of the men’s handicap singles, was ajso unable to be present for the- same reason.
The cup donated by Mr A. E'. Ford, of Auckland, for the men’s championship singles was presented by Mr Samuel to Mi’ S. Coppins, together with a small replica from the association.
