THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1928. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Mayor (Mr W. Marsha,ll)shas received advice through Mr A. M. Samuel, .M.P., that the Minister of Public Works ilias asked the-resident engineer, Mr O. G. Thornton, for an urgent report op the Borough Council’s proposals for the relief of local unemployment. It is hoped to have the Minister’s reply in the course of a few days. The Puke Roa.il 1 , from Te Tawa creek to the Puke Bridge, is in a deplorable condition at the present time The worst portion is, whei’J the road has been made along the stop-bank, where there are innumerable potholes which are daily becoming deeper with the. action of heavy motor traffic. / By defeating the Western Transvaal team at Potchefstroom on Wednesday, by 19 points to 8, the AH Blacks have now had five wins and two losses during the South African tour. To-morrow the All Blacks play Natal at Maritzburg. A great improvement to the main street of Ngatea is being made by the piping and filling of the roadside drain in front of Messrs Haywa.rd and McKay’s premise's. The Ngatea Hall Society, which owns the adjoining section, will s imilarly treat its frontage, in terms of a direction from the last annual meeting. The matter came up for discussion, at a meeting ’of the committee last Wednesday evening and was held over pending receipt of fur. ther information. A well attended meeting of the N.Z. Sha,remilkers’ Association .was hejd in the new Theatre Buildings, Paeroa, last evening, Mr P. G. Shirley presiding. A report of the meeting and the movement will appear in our next issue. In this issue a l.a.rge concrete building, together with five rooms built of rimu, is advertised for sale. Situated in the- heart of Paeroa, this building would make a first-rate motor garage or factory. Prior to the commencement of the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night a book was; passed round so that a permanent record could be obtained of those present, who were asked to enter their names and addresses. All went well until the b’.fet reached a well-known Auckland man who takes a keen interest in mining. He glanced 'at the lengthy list of na.mes, and then, with a humorous twinkle, asked: “What’s this. Mr Chairman, A bob in ?” The Ngatea Hall Committee is alive to the necessity of providing more seating accommodation, and at a meeting on Wednessday the secretary was instructed to obtain quotations for forms and chairs. The replacement of the hall piano was also under consideration, and three offers of instruments were received. The question was held over until further particulars were received. Pride of place in this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” is given to the arrival of the Southern Cross in Sydney, with vivid views of the giant ’plane, the reception, and individual swaps of the airmen. The prize-winners at the Napier competitions, the- Whangarei Waiata Society’s production of “The Arcadians,” a a piquant coloured supplement, a frontispiese of Alfred O’Shea, are special attractions. .Of charming interest is a page of chic fashions from London, while- another fascinating page is that devoted to candidates for the International Beauty Pageant. The miscellaneous division covers a wide range, Prince Carol of Rumania in England, bhe King at the Soccer Cup Final, at Wembley, zoo studies, Gene Tunncy, students’ annual capping procession at Wellington, football, racing, etc. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, First aid for coughs, colds, influenza.
