PHYSIQUE OF YOUTH.
IMPROVEMENT IN TWENTY YEARS. NEW TERRITORIAL STANDARD. A high standard of physical fitness is shown by the young men of to-day, according to officers of the Defence Department. In order to reduce the territorial force of .the Dominion, on the grounds of economy, the standard of physical fitness was raised recently, and is now in operation throughout the country. As a result of tlfe, men have been rejected from the ranks because they d'id pot comply with provisions in the newly set standard. “ This does pot mean that the men debarred from the- territorial uniform are physically unfit, or that the health of the manhood of the Dominion is falling,” one authority stated. “On the contrary, the standard of physique during the last 15 or 20 years has improved, if anything. Medical examiners report that the general standard is high. The recent standard set is higher than it has ever been: in the history of compulsory training in New Zealand.”
