Owing to the weather conditions which prevailed at Paeroa on Saturday the ladies-’ hockey match, golf club fixtures, and primary -school football matches were postponed. The s.s. Taniwha, from Auckland, with 25 passengers for Paeroa, made a, good passage last night, .and berthed at the Ngahina'wharf early thfls morn ing, the trip being done in just under eight hours-.. General satisfaction was expressed locally .wllien advice was received shortly before 9 o’clock yesterday morrting, that the All Blacks had defeated the Transvaal team by five points to -nil, at Johannesburg on Saturday. The next .match that tlie All Blacks play is against Western Transvaal at Potchcfstroom on Wednesday.
A railway bridge at. Morrinsville was discovered to be o-n fire at an early hour on Saturday morning. Several sleepers were burned before the outbreak was suppressed by the MorrinsVille fire brigade. The fire is believed to have been caused by hot ashes falling from an engine.
In connection, with the appointment of an assessor under, the Valuation Department for the Borough of P.aeroa, the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) reported at Thursday night’s meeting of the-council t-hat all formalities had been complied with, but there had been no noni'inations received for the position. The council was now required to appoint its'own ;as SetiSo L but the -Mayor was not prepared to give the council a lead that night. Of the opinion that there was.- no hurry Cr. E. Edwards moved that the appointment be deferred until the July meetinig.

But the other man also has two complete- digits, the superfluous one of which is complete in every respect. nail and all. So useful are thetwo thumbs to him that he can pick up 151 b weights by drawing the two thumbs together, like the nippers of a crab ! X-ray prints have beep taken at the hospital, of both, cases.
The Finance Committee reported at last Thursday’s meeting of tbe Paeroa Borough Council that the revenue to the district fund account during the month amounted to £lBB 9s 4d. Accounts totallling £665 13s 9d were passed for payment, leaving a -credit balapce, including advances made to various loan accounts, of £196 12& lOd. Credit balances were shown in the following loan, accounts : £4500 improvements to main streets account, £l4 Ils 7d ; 1920 street improvements account, £ll9 18s 6d ; Criterion bridge account. £B2 4s Id ; council chambers: a.c-co-unt, £39 18s 3d. In the house sewerage connections account and the sewerage loan account there are debit balances of £632 5s 10(} and £l3 2s Id respectsively.
A contract has been let by the Tourist Department for converting an old reservoir, in the Te Aroha Domainl into a swimming bath. It is situated behind No. 2 bath, and can be provided with tepid water frpin the main bath overflows. The reservoir is being extended and dressing rooms provided at a cost of £1200; and Te Aroha will within two months have its open-air swimming facilities in m'd-air. Tn our advertising columns.
