THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, JUNE 15, 1928. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Three bunding permits, including the erection of a shop in Normanby Road, additions to the Paeroa butter, factory, and the erection of a, signboard, were granted on the recomr mendat'on of the building committee at a meeting of the Paeroa Borough. Council last night. The total value of the permits was £1609. During the year ended March 31 last the sum of £191,101 7s 4d was expended from the Public Works Fund on the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers Improvement- Scheme. 9'xty-eight applications for the position of inspector were considered hi committee by the, Hauraki Plains County Council last evening, and after two hours’ discussion! Mr W. White, at present traffic inspector, for the Papakura Town Board, was appointed. Mr White is a superannuated superintendent of police, having rer tirefl from the Dorset County Constabulary in October, 1927. He has excellent credentials as a police officer, soldier, and inspector, ;a,ndj his application was the outstanding one. Prior to the monthly meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council yesterday a special meeting was held to pass special resolutions constituting the Netberton water supply district as from June 30, 1928. The Public Works Department is now having test piles driven in the Waitakaruru stream on the rite of the proposed bridge on the PaeroarPokeuo main highway. Probably one of the shortest meetings in the history of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, when, the whole of the business was disposed of in a little under, sixty minutes. The thirty-three applications for the position of ferrymap at Pipiroa were considered for two hours by the Hauraki Plains County Council ip committee at its meeting yesterday, and finally Mr R. G. Welch, of Netherton, was selected. •Mr F. N. Jac'omb, Eyesight Specialist, 20 years’ experience; will visit Paeroa at Brocket, and Shand’s rooms on Tuesday, June 19th. Satisfaction guaranteed.* The Thames Valley Electric Power Board is offering a reward of £5 for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who fired a shotgun at the power lines in the vicinity of Kerepeehi. As a result of the action the whole of that section of the Hauraki Plains was left without power and lighting until such time as repairs could be effected. Apart from the inconvenience caused to consumers, the Power Board wits put to heavy expense in renewing the damaged portion of the line, and is making a determined effort to bring the offender to book. In this issue the Railway Department advises details of the time-table alterations, operating from Monday next consequent on the taking over of the line betweep Tahawai and Tauranga. Up to the present the service has been a tri-weekly one 'on the line between Waihi and Tauranga,, but from Monday next a daily train service will operate between Auckland, Tauranga, a.nd Taneatua. Illustrations covering a wide range of subjects feature this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review.” The double- centre page presents an attractive spectacle with its well-arranged snaps of the Great Northern steeplechase meeting at Ellerslie. Rugby followers wil'h be keen to see the photographs of the matches at Eden Park, and also of the Well-ington-Westland match. Special interest will be shown in the views of the monoplane Southern Cross at Suva. A three-coloured supplement of Glendowie, a. frontispiece of Moiseiwitsch, the pianist, a page of cha.r.ming brides, and numerous stage, society, an.d screen snaps should prove attractive.
