PEKAPEKA WATER.

AN INEFFICIENT SCHEME. DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL. Complaints of the inefficiency of the Pekapeka Road water supply were made to the Haura.ki Plains County Council—which installed the scheme at the request pf settlers—by a deputation comprising Messrs W. E. Chick, W. M. Barton, C. F. Peace, and Hedgecomb yesterday. On the subject the engineer mentioned 'in 'his monthly report that the pump continued to give trouble, ,aml the question of either providing a and efficient pump or ceasing expenditure on the old one should be considered. Cr. Fisher explained that there was insufficient pressure to serve the whole area when there was a, big draw-off. The end settlers frequently ■received no water. Mr Barton expressed the opinion that the pump was too small. The chairman pointed out that tne settlers had adopted a scheme submit" ted by a contractor, sb the council could not be blamed for any faults in construction." Cr. Fisher said that the pump had always proved inadequate. A new pump was necessary, and he would suggest that the engineer, go into the question arid report to a committee. The engineer stated that when installed the pump ha.d actually delivered more water than was required. On account of the dredgipg in the river and the landing of metal riearby the efficiency of the pump halxbeen greatly reduced. The metal syid sand pumped had caused exceptional wear. Cr. Parfitt expressed the opinion that the scheme was badly designed. At its best it would only deliver twothirds of the amount of water, which experience, assisted by actual meter readings, had proved necessary for an equal area of farm land. The chairman, engineer, clerk, and riding member were appointed to deal with the matter after, conferring with the settlers.
