GAMES ON THE PLAINS.

LAST SATURDAY’S RESULTS.

Cold, windy, wet weathey prevailed for the opening of the second, round of the Hauraki Plains, Rugby competitions on Saturday last. However, there was a good attendance at each of the five matches played. TURUA V. NGATEA. The Turua v. Nga.tea senior match at Turua was dull at the stare, with Turua making the best showing. Later on the pace increased, and the later stages were bright and interesting. Ou the whole the teams were evenly matched. The wind was blowing across the field. The teams lined out as follows: — Ngatea.—A. Killgour, C. Y’Qung, P. Reti, W. Williams, F. Nicol, J. McPherson, C. White, s. Dalgety, J. Beasley, L. Peckham, R. C. Abel, M. Martin, p. Leonard, H. Kirkman, RJ. McPike. Turua. —C. Blacklaws, R. Madgwick, M. Madgwick, W. McCoid, L. Clotworthy, A- Elvin, J. Catlin, K. Fox, H. Schofield, A. Fisher, A. Kejk, E. Gill, G. Elvin, G. McCowatt, W. Clark. Ngatea kicked off and the Turua forwards returned to Killgour,, who cleared. Play in midfield terminated with a penalty kick which shifted operations into Turua’s twenty-five, where much line-play ensued. The Ngatea forwards gained ground until from a scrum Catlin relieved to midfield 1 . McPherson led Ngatea on an attack, ,and Turua followed up a free kick to Ngatea’s line, Blacklaws being conspicuous. Open play followed near Ngatea’s line until the change-over. Turua opened the second quarter with a strong attack and held play on. Ngatea’s line, till Abel relieved to ■midfield, where more close forward play ensued. Turua, gaining ground. Ngatea."forced. Play continued in Turua’s territory, being very hard and close. There was no score at halftime.

Turua resumed the offensive until long line kicks took play to the home team’s territory. Open play followed and S. Dalgety scored. J. McPherson failed to, convert. Ngatea 3, Turua 0< Lang replaced Blacklaws as full-back. The Ngatea 'forwards played dose, and another force, resulted. Very willins play followed, Turua’s weight telling Fisher almost scored, but Ngatea forced. Play remained in Ngatea’s twenty-five until Williams, Dalgety, and Maj-tin. broke through to midfield. The last quarter also opened with a strong Turua attack, and after a scrummage on Ngatea’s line, and several stoppages on account of minor injuries, Turua failed with a. penalty k’ck. Open play took the ball to Turua’s end, where a lucky kick relieved. W. white replaced Clark. Gill failed to score with a free kick. Fast open play terminated in a force by Ngatea. Another bout of open play in. midfield saw Turua gain ground, but no further score resulted. Turua had the best, of the scrum work and in tight play, but the Ngatea forwards, were more active. D'algety and Abel (forwards) and P. Reti (back) were the stars of the Ngatea team, while for the home tea.m Fox and Gill of the forwards and Clotworthy and Catlin of the backs were prominent. Mr, J. Kidd was referee. WAITAKARURU V .WEST. Waitakaruru journeyed by road to Patetonga, and the game with the West team resulted in a draw. C. Clark and L. Berney scored tries for Waitakaruru, and W. Castello kicked a goal from a mark and G. Garry scored for the home team. Mr A. Otter was referee; TURUA-NGATEA JUNIORS. J. McCormack, J. Marshall, apd L. Keir scored for the .Turua juniors, anl Keir also kicked: a penalty goal, while for.'Ngatea J. Donaghy and V. McPherson scored ;a,nd Kawene kicked a goal. Mr A. Tynap w.as referee. OTHER GRADES. No score was registered in the Ngatea v. Turua third-grade match at Ngatea, and the schoolboys’ match at Ngatea between Ngatea and Kerepeehi also ended in a draw. T. Carr scored for Kerepeehi, and L. Schultz for Ngatea.
