GOLF.

OPENING ON SATURDAY. LARGE GATHERING ON LINKS. The official opening of the local golf club was held on the link at the racecourse on Saturday’ afternoon. The day was an. ideal one for outdoor sports, and a record gathering was present for the opening, including visitors from all the neighbouring clubs. The grounds are in excellent condition for golfing, and on Saturday the, greens were keen. The paddocks have been, heavily stocked, and also harrowed, and with the exception of the approach to Nos. 5 and 7 greens the grass was short, making for a better and more interesting game than was the case on some previous years; ,

In extending a welcome to the visitors the president, Mr A. F. Steenman, said he trustee] that they ijwoulJ enjoy their visit to the Paeroa links. From the present indications it seemed as though, there would be a revival of interest in local golf this winter, and lie hoped that they would have an harmonious- year. 'Ke was particularly pleased at having such a splendid representative gathering of visiting golfers.

Mr, Steedman then called on Mrs E. W. Porritt, president of. thej ladies’ club, to hit off the first ball, which was done amidst cheers.

The game for the afternoon was a mixed foursome, in. which fifteen teams took part. The best card handed: in was that of H. R. Thorp and Miss P. Cooke, with a net score of 37.

Delicious afternoon tea was provided by the lady members of, the club. - At the conclusion of the afternoon Mr Cfleindon returned thanks on behaii of the visitors, for the club’s hospitality, and wished it a prosperous year. It was always a pleasure, he said, to visit the Paeroa club, and l ,e offered congratulations oh, the appearance of the links. MATCH ON WEDNESDAY. On Wednesday the Ladles’ Golf Club will hold a jumble match. There is to be a draw for partners at 1.30, and it is. hoped that as, many members as possible will take, part in the game.
