AWAITI WATER SUPPLY.
REPORT BY ENGINEER.
ESTIMATE OF COST. The Hauraki Plains county engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to the council on Thursday on the proposed Nethcrton (Awaiti) water, supply scheme as fallows :— “The area to be served by the proposed scheme embraces approximately 4000 acres. “In arriving at the maximum supply I have assumed a carying capacity, when the whole area is fully developed, ot 60 head of stock per 100 acres. On a basis of 20 gallons per head of stock, including domestic use. during summer months, a total of 50,000 gallons per 24 .hours will be required. This quantity will not be drawn off at an even average rate, as there will be one peak hour after each milking, when the dr;aw-off will average six gaillons per head, or. say, 15,000- gallons ofr each peak hour. To provide for this peak draw-off there are three feasible methods :
“(1) By water tow<ar of sufficient height and capacity to cope with the maximum demand by gravity.
“(2) By installing'a pump sufficiently large to dehver the water as drawn ojff-.
“{3) By providing a tr.ough storage of not les|s than. 300 gallons, per 100 acres : such troughs to be placed adjacent to milking sheds. “The first proposal can- be cut out on account of capital cost. The second; can be eliminated as uneconomical. The third method II recommend, to be adopted and made compulsory. “I recommend- a pump having a rated capacity of 'sooo' gallons per hour, and allow a working capacity, of 66 per cent., or 3333 gallons, per'liOUr, thus leaving a good margin, over maximum 24 hours’ demand. This pump would require a 10 h.p. motor with switch relay, and tank stand and tank for automatic float operating switch. The pump would be capable of pumping against a 300 ft head-. T ; would recommend the use of a valve cutting out pressure at 601 - A special pulley for gradual piclwup of. load may be necessary.
“The following estimate may be considered as sufficiently accurate to be adopted as a ‘ basis on. which to raise a loan for the scheme : — “ Mains.—River to Roach’s , cast iron, 7260 ft by s,ih at 4s, £1452 ; Roach’s; toi Awaiti W.R., cast iron, 6600 ft by 4'in at 3s, £990 ; Roach’s to Crosbie’s, wrought iron, galvanised, 3960 ft by 2in at Is, £l9B ; Roach’s to Harms’, 3168 ft by l%in at 9d, 118 16»; Halligan’s to Nesbit’s. 7590'f.t by 21-jin at Is 7d, £561 5s 10(1; Halligan’s to Schcol, 4158 ft by 3in at Is 9%d, £372 9s 9d ; School to CoHicutt’s, 6732 ft by 2%in at Is 7d, £532 19s ; Cd'Micutt’s to Carter’s, 2310 ft by l%in at 9d, £B6 12S 61 ; Coldicutt’s to Prout’s, 1320 ft by I%'n at -9d, £49 10 ! s*; School to, Sarjant’s; 2310ft'by 1% in at 9d, £B6 12s 6d. Total, £4448 5s 7d. “Trenfching and. filling 688 chains at 15s, £576'- tank,stand and tank, £100.; fitting suction pipe to river, £25. ;. connecting tank to service mains and pump with valve pressure! gage, £5O ; double-action Tangye pump with motor switch and relay, £260; tees for mains, crossing road with service pipes, £lOO ; pumphouse and! concrete foundation, £lOO-; freight and cartage, £2'so ; laying jointing and screwing 688 chains df piping, £l5O ; ten per cent., say, £6OO ; cost of raising loan,, £9O 14s sd. Total, £6690.
“By substituting wrought iron galvan'sed pipes for the sin and 4in cast iron pipes a saving of £360 could be effected, but I. do not recommend this course.” .
The clerk’was instructed to supply Cr. Reid with details., of the-rate re; quired l for a Iqa-n of this amount, and it was agreed- to arrange, a meeting of settlers to discuss various aspects of the proposal.
