HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY
WOBK DURING THE MONTH. engineer’s report. The foPowlng report was submitted to the Plains County .Council meeting by the engineer, Mr F. Basham, on Thursday last: — “Main Highways. —Necessary patching has been done and road skept ' graded. Roads genei<ally have beneiited ’by the recent rains. On the Orongo-Netherton. highway a start has- ,■ been made with forming water-tables and scarifying metal. I, am doubtful whether there is sufficient metal on th o last 30 chains at the Netherton <J end to start disturbing. Ii propose ■ jfeting the road and testing before proceeding with the. scarifying. “Old Main Road, Netherton.—The . surfacing on this, road has been com pleted. “Kaihere-Toitjiapc man. — Broken weather has delayed the, work to a certain, extent. There remains about three days’ work to complete the metalling on Torehape. Road. It is doubtful whether it can be finished this season, as, the road is. now very spft.” . The engineer advocated terminating the contract so that the contractors could receive the whole of their money. It would be a hardhsip to retain 25 per cent, of the money until the work was completed next summerMr Walton suggested ascertaining the view's of the settlers, and it was ’ decided to defer action untU the June meeting,, by which time the roads might have dried sufficiently to enable, the work to be finished. “Coxhead’s Filling—The Metalling of this portion of the WaitakaruruMorrinsville road has been completed, 172% yards of metal having been uged.”
The riding member anil engineer were requested to report on the question of metalling several small sections of Mangarata Ro,ad. The foijmal. resolution required by tt the Government agreeing to maintain Ir the road was carried. . “-Miranda Road.—l consulted Or. Harris regarding the requested sheH- ' ing of a portion of this road. Taking into consideration, the lateness oif, the season, and the fact that a proposal to complete the metalling on the whole of the unmetalled portion of this road is still under dtis'cussion, w£i consider the time inopportune to proceed further with the matter.”
