Since the opening of the shooting season on May 1, better sport has been -obtained within the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Club’s district. Conditions obtaining on the opening day were unpropitious. The weather was stormy, and there was a vast quantity of water about. Owing to the duck Hying high, and being able to find plenty of resting places in sheltered aieas, sport was poor. With the receding of. the flood-w.ater. and finer weather,'.some good bags have been obtained in 'the district. Pheasants do not appear to be very plentiful, but a few fine birds have been obtained in the Karahgahake district this week.
Since the beginning of the wWk' wintry conditions have obtained at Paeroa. Wednesday and Thursday nights and mornings were very cold, and although there were brief intervals of sunshine, rain fell some time during the days,, and the atmosphere became bleak and cold. There is still a fair, amount of growth, and there is plenty of. feed for stock, but farmers are not looking forward to the advent of frosts for a while yet.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Hauraki. Plains County Council, when the question of sending a delegate to the N.Z. Counties’ Association conference in Wellington' was under discussion Cr. Harris expressed the opinion that an alteration should be, made ini the means of collecting hospital rates. He advocated levying the rate on a population basis in addition to the valuation basis,. Cr. Walton said that at present the Thames Hospital collected 60 per cent, of its levy from tlie counties and 40 per cent, from the boroughs, whereas if the ratq was on a population basis the county quqta would be only 40 per cent. -At the present time Thames Borough paid £lOOO-odd. and Hauraki Plains County, with practically the same population, paid £3OOO-odd. It was agreed that thert was no justification for the expense of sending a delegate to tlie conference.
Last night the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society he'd tlie second of its country meetings-at Ta Aroha', tlie Auckland president. Mr McKenzie, presiding over a large attendance.
