HAPPINESS IN OLD AGE.
THE FORMULA IN LIFE. ESCAPE FROM IDLENESS. “There' is no question as. to the force and vitality of many men between 60' and 70 years, of age. All the same, a change comes t.o most men about 60 fears, of age,” writes the Rev. R. G. Gil'ie, who, at 63, is leaving the Presbyte.rian Church, Marylebone, for a smaller church in Bath. “This is the formula : in youth, more energy than experience; in middle age, if happy, as much energy as experience ; in eld age. more experience than energy. The dawning of the Hafet' pericd ought tp be the signal for; most -T us for reconsideration of occupation. Some lack the will to escape from business. Slaves of the ma-, chines they have created, they never learn how to change, gear. They used to control their business, now their business controls them.- They are afraid that to give up i& to die —and they are not far, wrong. The, essential condition for happy withdraaval from business cares, is to have enough to do outside them. Idleness for the habitually active man is an invitation to illness. Tlie mo&t vigorous anfi serene retired men of business I nave known were those who set themselves to serve the community and begin* in good time. They brought their finely trained powers to public service. More men will escape from nusine.s : s when they have solved the problem of how to escape from the ensuing idleness.”
