TRAINING AT THE RACECOURSE.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR WEEK-END.

The training of the territorials of the first battalion, Hauraki Regiment, who are attending the casual camp at the racecourse, Paeroa, is proceeding satisfactorily.

The weathqr igince the camp commenced has not been finite all that could bed esired, but it has been possible to carry oni training each day without undue interference. On Tuesday morning, taking advantage of a fine morning after the storm on Monday, the tents were struck and the ground thoroughly dried before they were re-erected. Great care has been taken to see that the bedding was dry, and everything possible has been done for the comfort and welfare of the men. The food is of excellent quality, and complaints are nil. Considering the unpropitious weather and the temporary change in the. living conditions, the health of tlie troops is very satisfactory. Sick parades are held) daily, and every attention is given by Lieut. J. A. Patterk son, N.Z.M.C, and his medical staff, to those who parade sick. Yesterday Colonel-Commandant H. R. Potter, C.M.G.. N.Z.S.C., officer commanding the Northern Command, and Colonel J. E. Duigan, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C,, general staff officer, Auckland, paid a formal visit of inspection to the camp The training .yesterday com'i prised rifle exercises, battle drill, platoon drill, handling'of Lewis guns, and finished up with a march past. The troops -marched past in platoons., the salute being taken by Colonel Potter, and they returned in close column of platoons. Addressing the officers and meh, Colonel Potter said that he was particularly struck with the steadiness and soldierly appearance of all ranks. Their work during the day had pleased him very much, and the zeal and enthusiasm with which the. training had been performed was praiseworthy and reflected credit on the officers and l n.e.o.’s. Good progress had been made in a short time, and it was gratifying to see that the high standard of efficiency in the Haluraki Regiment was not diminishing. Colonel Duigan was also generous in his praise of the work that he had 'seen, and congratulated those responsible on the organisation anid cleanliness of the camp. In addition to the general work this afternoon the troops, are to carry out a platoon Attack scheme, when blank ammulnition will be used. Tonight they will be exercised' in night operations, whein a tactical . scheme will bei carried out, and to add a realistisie totich to the proceedings Verey lightg and flares will be used. To-morrow morning a company in attack will be carried ouA and in the afternoon the programme will include a tactical scheme. DANCE AT CAMP. To-morrow night, commencing at 7.30 o’clock and finishing. at 11, the treops are giving-a dance at the camp/ and a hearty invitation, is extended to all ladies.. To enable ladies to reach thq camp and retprn safely, motorcars will be provided and will leyive the post office at 7.15 p.m. and the camp at 11.15 pan. The dance music will be supplied by the regimental band, supplemented by ah orchestra. It is a long time since a military dance was held at Paeroa, and the attendance and co-joperation of the, ladies to-morrow might is 'confidently expected. ' GUEST DAY. On Sunday church parade will be Held at t‘ho camp at 11 a.m., the hymns being played by <he regimental band. A Roman Catholic Service is also to be held at 11 a.m. During the afternoon the men will carry out light exercises, and a band concert will be held. A cordiai invitation is extended to the general public to visit the camp apy time during the afternoon.
