JUNIOR GAME AT PAEROA.
WEST AND SUBURBS. The junior match played at Paeroa on Saturday between West and Suburbs was fast and open, and resultedin a draw, six points each. In the escond Quarter tight play folr lowed a line-out near halfway and the West forwards broke away for M. Poland to score. G. Taylor’s kick was unsuccessful. West 3, Suburbs 3. Following the kick-out KiUgour carried on with the b'al'li a' toe, but it shot out to the side line. Tight play on West’s line resulted; in a scrum, and A. Morrison forced his way over the line. The kick was unsuccessful 1 . Suburbs 3, West 3. On resuming after half-time Suburbs carried play into West’s twentyfive, from where, in ;a loose r,ush, A. Moi risen scored his second try, which' was also unconverted. Suburbs 6, West 3. Following the kick-out Poland broke away near midfield, and after making a good run passed: to Bailey, who scored a good try. Suburbs 6, West 6. T.he game? ended without any further score. Mr E. Smith was referee. THE CURTAIN-RAISER. As a curtain-raiser to the senior match the East and' West thirdrgrade teams played a match on the No. 1 ground which resulted in an eiasy win) for the black and whites, the scores being 25 to 3. For the winners tries were scored by Vercoe (2), G. Bramlley, M. Irwin, S. Williams, G. Ed-i wards, and Johnson, the latter also converting two -tries. B. Miller scored the only try for East. Mr A. F. Thorp was referee. PAEROA RUGBY UNION. . MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Paeroa Ragby Union was held op Monday night, the chairman (Mr W. P. Pennell) preside ing over Messrs M. Crosby, E. P. Fathers, E. Edwards, H. Tams, J. Pinder, Father J. T. Taylor, and D. S. Kerr (secretary). MATCH WITH TE AROHA. An application for permission to piiay a junior, match at Te Aroha tomorrow (Saturday) was received from the West Club. In view of the fact that this dub has drawn a bye permission was granted. DELEGATES TO UNION. The Suburbs Club wrote advising that Messrs W. Welsh and P.*C'orbett had been appointed delegates to the union, ajid advice was also received that the West Club had appointed ■Messrs.' C. F. Snow, and J. Verran. SWEATERS FOR REFEREES. On the motion of Mr Fathers it was decided to procure three vvhitei sweaters for the Referees Association tlip garments to remain the property of the union. REGISTRATIONS. The following additional registirar tions were accepted :—East seniors, 1 ; juniors, 2 ; third-grade, 4. West seniors, 1; juniors, 1 ; third-grade 2. Pirates, 1. Suburbs seniors, 2 ; juniors, 2. THEFTS FROM DEESSING-SHED. The secretary reported that there had been a number of thefts from the dressing,-shed on Saturday last, and lie thought some steps should be taken to prevent a repetition of the offences.
The chairman said that the attention of the police should be drawn to the matter. Petty thieving should not be tolerated', and the property of the players would have to be protected. It was resolved to place the dress-ing-shed in the care of the gatekeeper, and that all junior players place their valuables with Mr J .P. Monk and avail themselves of his offer of the use of a dressing room. REPRESENTATIVE JERSEYS. The secretary reported that he had been able to find only 32 representative jerseyis; that were fit to play in. From records it could: be shown that about 16 jerseys had been either los(; or retained by players. The chairman said that the jerseys were the property of. the union, and if players were sports at all they would return them. The union could not afford to purchase new jerseyis. every season. After some discussion it was resolved to appoint Mr Tams to attend' aftl representative matches and to accept responsibility for the return of the jerseys during the season. • DRAW FOR FIRST ROUND. The dra,w for the first round was approved as, follows : — April 28. —Seniors : West v. Pirates, at Paeroa, East v. Suburbs at PaeroaJuniors: East v. Suburbs, at Hikutaia ; West a bye. May 5. —Seniors: East v. Pirates, at Paeroa; West v. Suburbs, at Hikutaia. Juniors : East v. West, at Pae-i roa; Suburbs a bye. INSURANCE OF PLAYERS. In reply to an inquiry the Piako Rugby Union wrote with reference to the Insurance of players and 1 explained that the union’s system was that each player before- Commencing a match paid Is to the captain or some other person appointed to collect. No player was entitled to insurance if inljured in a match unless, he had paid his shilling. The maximum insurance paid was £B, the period covered was six weeks at £2 a week for the first two weeks and £1 for the following four weeks. It was pointed out, however, that collections from players did not as a rule pay for the amount of insurance paid out during a season. “For instance,” concluded the' letter, “last season we paid £9l 3s out of the insurance fund 1 , whi'lfe our collections from players amounted to £5O only.” It was decided to thank the union for the information. HOCKEY GROUND RENT. On the motion of the chairman, seconded' by Mr Crosby, it was decided to pay the rental of the Paeroa ladies’ hockey ground, the union to take al'l gate receipts. The question of a donat'on to the club was deferred for the time being. It was decided to comply with tlie request for the services of a groundsman to put the field in. order.
TIMING OF MATCHES. On beha|lf of the referees’ Association Mr G. Sale asked 1 that the official timekeepers be asked to ring the bell for the quarters and finish of a game exactly on. time regardless of the position of play at the time. It was resolved to comply with the request. REFEREES’ WHISTLES. On the motion of Mr Pinder it was decided to request the Referees’ Association to arrange for referees to use whistles of different tones when two matches were being played at the same time. STARTING OF MATCHES. Attention was drawn by Mr Tams to the fact that the senior game on Saturday last was 20 1 minutes behind schedule time ’u. commencing. He expressed the hope that the union would take a definite stand in the matter. The chairman said that some lati-
tude had been given on account of it
being the first match of the season. However, for the future the referees hud received their instructions, and the union’s decision to penalise offending teams would be stictly env forced. PLAYING OUT OF BOUNDS.
Mr Pinder said that three players named J. Lee, C. O’Brien, and Jack Rackham, living at Ka.ranga.hake but working at Waikino, who had previously applied for a transfer to the Wai hi union and had been refused, had played for Waihi on Saturday last. If his information was correct the players were flouting the ruling of the union ami some action, should be taken. It was decided to write to the WiUlhi union asking if. the information was ■correct, and if so to pllace the matter before the Thames Valley Union. FINANCE. The secretary reported that the gate takings at Paeroa on Saturday last amounted to £4 3s. and at Hikutaia 15s.
