Owing to Wednesday next, April 25 (Anzac Day), being a statutory holiday, there will be- no publication of the “Gazette” on that day.
At the local Poflice Court this morning, before Mr E. Edwards, J.P., a young'Maori man named Tai Raiwhiti, whese home is at Pukekohe, was charged .with atempting to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a spear at Tirnhia yesterday. On the application of Constable McCljnchy, who stated that there were probably other charges pending, a> remand was granted until. Monday next, May. 30, the defendant to be kept under police supervision in the meantime.
The annual, generall meeting of parishioners of St. Paul’s parish, Paeroa, is to be held in the Parish Hall to-night. - ’
Nominations for. seats on school committees of schools in the Auckland education district having an attendance of over. 250 pupils close at 8 o’clock this evening. Up to the time of going to press the secretary of the Paeroa. District High School Committee had, received five nominations for the nine seats on the committee. -
!n connection with the arrangements for the, Anzac Day observance on Wednesday- territorials and senior cadets- are required to parade at the drill-shed at 2 p.m. sharp.
It was stated at Saturday night’s meeting of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation club that the prospects for the coming shooting season in this district appear very bright. Pheasants are said to be plentiful at present. The. season opens on Tuesday, May 1.
The s.s. Waipu has been placed on the, Paeroa run while the s-s. Taniwha is laid up for overhaul. T.he sjs. Hauiti has taken over the Piako River run.
The Hauraki United Drainage Board’s monthly meeting on Friday last was an exceptional one. No petiwere received and no resolutions were rescinded. A motion to rescind lapsed for want of a seconder.
The Ngatea butter factory has ceased working on Sundays, and this week will only receive cream on four days.
The Hauraki Plains Co-operative Dairy Co., of Turua, paid out on Friday at the rate of Is 5d for cheesp supply and Is 3d for butter supply. In addition a. bonus, of 2s 5d on cheese ahq Is 8d on butter was paid on account of last season's supply. This bonus* has been largely due to the exceptionally low shrinkage of the company’s cheese, which bn a total of 1,366,2651 b averaged 1-98 per, cent, as compared with the Control Board’s average of 2.81 per cent. This remarkably .low shrinkage reflects great credit on the manager and staff of the Turua factory.
