TURUA-NETHERTON ROAD

CARTER’S CORNER SECTION.

WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING!.

The works., committee of the, Hauraki Plains County Council met at Carter’s Corner, on the Turua-Neth-Qrton road, on Wednesday morning. Cr. E' L. Walton presidted over Crs. JC. Miller, C. W. Parfitt, W. Madgwick, and J. A. Reid. The engineer (Mr FBasham) and the clerk (Mr E. A. Mahoney) were in attendance.

The chairman stated that the meeting 'had been held to discuss what was to be done with' the road from Troughton’s, to Carter’s corner. Cr. Madgwick said that he had notified the settlers to be present, but apparently they had forgotten. Mr R. H. Heappey said that the settiers desired to know the costs of the various systems. of making ;an > improved road. In hiis opinion sealing was the most suitable. The' distance was 145 chains. On about 50 chains there was a good depth of metal. Cr. Madgwick pointed out that thq existing road was of insufficient width for a highway. Cr. Miller thought that the Highways Board would hot subsidise the reconditioning of thq road, but it might subsidise bitumen-sealing. Cr. Walton said that the road Would undoubtedly become a main highway when the Hauraki bridge was opened. Under those circumstances it might be advisable to wait until the Highways Board undertook the major part of the financing.

Thei engineer said that the road could be reconditioned by scarifying and rolling.. A water-table would be necessary on the drain side, and the cost would ‘not exceed £6O.

Cr. Madgwiek was dubious about this being sufficient to deal with, the increased amount of traffic. He agreed that drainage was necessary. The settlers on thei road were onily entitled to a certain amount of the riding funds, and it was not reasonable t'o rate the rest of the; riding, which; was paying a special rate of 4%d for bitumen roads. He was of opinion that tlie area was entitled to have £9O expended. With the subsidy there would be £lBO available. If the; settlers were agreeable to reconditioning, he would advocate it, and if the road whs done and went to pieces it would show that nothing could be. done by ordinary expenditure* ’ Tile engineer stated that bitumensealing would cost about £3oo'o. On the motion.of Crs. Madgwiek and Reid it was decided that the ordinary system of 'maintenance by scarifying and rolling arid adding metal to the amount of the money available be Proceeded with.
