PAEROA BATHS.
WORK NEARING COMPLETION.
REPORT BY COMMITTEE.
The following report was submitted by the Baths Committee at last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council: — “Weather permitting, it is expected to complete the bath and buildings this week. There will be a fair amount of filling, levelling, and grassr ing to do when tlie> buildings are completed. Thc committee proposes to level and grass the fill ( ing which has been dumped on the Ohinemuri Club’s property adjoining the boundary. “If not too late in the season, the committee is of opinion that the official' opening should be run in conjunction with a school swimminlg carnival. However, nothing definite can be arranged at the present moment. “The bath loan account is weill in funds, and no doubt the work will be completed for the amount of loan authorised.”
Cr. J. W. Silcock (chairman of the committee) recommended that in the meantime no painting be done on any corrugated iron, but all woodwork be painted. It would be necessary to call separate tenders for painting the fence later on. The question of Placing a barbed wire over the top of the fence should be held over in the meantime, ,he considered, as the wires would be unsightly. He had no recommendation to make.
The Mayor said l he was not in favour of leaving the fences unprotected. The council had a valuable property which would probably be closed for several months, and he moved that the council take steps to protect the property before the job was completed. A 6ft fence was nothing to anyone who wanted to trespass upon the property, and considerable damage could be done.
Cr. E. A. Porritt thought that barbed wire stapled to outriggers was unsightly, and he consi lered; that the mattgr. should be referred back to the baths committee to arrange for ways and means of adequately protecting the property. In answer to Cr. Pinder the Mayor said that there, would be no water in the baths during the .winter months. It was finally resolved to have the sides of the property- protected so that access was not obtainable.
Cr. E. Edwards thought that the council should not be mandatory, and the matter of protection might very well be referred to tlie baths committee.
Cr. Porritt agreejd that the baths committee should be given the opportunity of attending to the matter and giving effect to the council’s wishes.
The -Mayor said he‘did not want'the council to think he was functioning on tlie, committee. Cr. Silcock said he always understood that the Mayor, functioned on all committees.
The Mayor : Oh', no ; don’t get away with that idea.
Cr. Brenan: Are things not going too .well, Your Worship 1 The Mayor, replied that they werq very satisfactory, but he was strougSy opposed to Cr. Edwards’ suggestion. After considerable discussion, the Mayor’s recommendation was carried.
