A meeting convened by the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) for t,liQ purpose of making arrangements for the Anzac Day service on Wednesday next jvas held at thq Municipal Chambers this morning. There were,, present t,he Revs. Weadqn and Pickering, Envoy W. Wilson (Salvation. Army), and Lieutenant V. J. Innes, N.Z.S.C. It was decided to organise a parade of returned soldiers, territorials,, senior cadets, scouts, girl guides, and brownies, to assemble at the Paeroa district high school grounds at 2 p.m. After the placing of a wreath at the foot of the Roll of Honour at the .school by the. Mayor and official party, the parade will march to the Domain, w.here a commemoration service is to be held on s'mi’lar lines to that of last year. In the event of the afternoon being wet, a united service will be held at the Aurora Theatre.
A party of Auckland motorists who ignored the, speed limits white passing through the Hauraki Plains on 1 , Saturday last probably now realise that limits are imposed for the protection of motorists as well as other users of the roads. Nearing Dalgety’s corner • the driver realised that to get round the right angle, turn speed: would have to be reduced. The brakes were applied, and the car skidded sideways for over 30ft and stopped on. the drain bank minus a tyre.
Beneficial rain fell 'on. the Hauraki Plains on Monday afternoon and evening, replenishing household tanks, which were; again becoming empty, and doing a great amount of good to farms and gardens. The metalled roads also benefited considerably.
During the week-end the. East senior football team tried itself out against tlie newly formed Pirates chib at the railway settlement sports ground:. After a clean, fast, and open game the. East fifteen proved superior by winn'ng by ten points to six. For the; winners tries, were scored by T. Lovatt and H. Moore, both of which were converted by S. Williams. The tries for Pirates were obtained by Lockett and T. Bullock. Mr E. Smith was referee.
A novel definition of the word “farm” which, on account of the fact that a careful 'Search of the dictionaries fails to confirm it, must be regarded as unofficial, was given by the host when the party of Canterbury farmers visited the estate of Mr A. S. Holmes recently (reports the Southland Times). He said “A farm is a piece of land entirely surrounded by mortgages.” This provoked much amusement among the farmers prese,nt, which was not greatly abated when, Mr Holmes added : “We are glad that the. mortgages are not visible, and that the vis’tors cannot sec them.”

Thet night-play bowling competitions, usually held on Thursday nights, will be heild this (Wednesday) evening.
The meeting called by the, Paeroa Referees’ Association, for last night lapsed for want of a. quorum, there being only three members present. By mutual arrangement Mr G. Sale was appointed to represent the association on the management committee of the Paeroa; Rugby Union.
There has been an adequate rainfall locally during this month. On Monday afternoon., and) again, at night, there was a very heavy downpour, and water-tables and drains were running to capacity during the, deliuge. The whole district is looking fresh and green, while the bright sunshine has done much to stimulate growth. Farm lands and pastures are, now responding well after the, prolonged spell of dry weather, and there is an abundance of feed for stock. Such a; mild aiutumn gives an. indication of a good winter.
A thrilling story of a race with death is told in Ashburton, states thq correspondent of the Lyttelton Times. A local garage proprietor was asked to go to Christchuteh to procure a, certain serum in. an endeavour to save the life of a fourteein-year-old girl suffering from infantile paralysis. He needed no second bidding, and set off at breakneck speed for the city. There he procured, what was wanted and started back, reaching Ashburton two hours and twenty minutes after he had sejt out. In the meantime, howe.ver, the sufferer had passed away.
The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council is to be held to-mor-row night.
■A number of local turf enthusiasts left Paeroa this morning by motor-car to attend the second day’s races at Avondale to-day.
