LAST SATURDAY’S MATCH. WEST DEFEATS TURUA. Thc< first game of Rugby football to be played on the Paeroa domain this season was on Saturday afternoon, when a. fifteen from Turiia- played the local West team. The game was fast, fairly open, and interesting. The local team sihowqd the better combination, especially among the backs, and as a try-out a fair exhibition of the code was given. It was obvious that many of the players on both sides require to undergo some training before the season advancer farThe home team was much l superior, especially in the second half, and the game, ended West 15, Turua 6. The teams were :—

West—E. Verran, F. Kniight, Lockett, J. Verran, Lewis, L. C. Masters, W. Fraser, R. Swann, L. Nietld, Bell, Saunders, D. Snow, W. Southby, V. Carrick, Maxwell, M. Poland.

Turua. — Marshall, A. Elvin, MMadgwick, P. Madgwick, McCormick, Sedgwick, G. Elvin, Thrupp, Keith. Gate, A. Fisher, Hutchinson, C. Blacklaws, H. Schofield, Ryan. West kicked off with tihq wind, but shortly afterwards the home tqaiii wa-; compelled to force. Give and take play followed until just before the close of the quarter, when Knight carried play into Turua’s twenty-five and,- following a scramble in front of the posts, Poland' gathered; in and crossed the line. Southby’s kick was unsuccessful. West 3, Turua 0.

In the second quarter the visitors took advantage of the wind and forced the play. From a mark by Masters loose play resulted, during which Schofield scored a good try. The, kick failed. West 3, Turua 3. In the casing stages of the quarter J. Verran and Poland made a good opening for Knight to score, but Poland failed to convert. West 6, Turua 3.

Immediately after commencing the, ..second half Masters kicked a penalty goal. Turua attacked str’ongly, but .a free kick brought relief. From the ensuing line-out Fraser started a ne'at passing bout, which terminated in Lockett scoring a good. try. The kick failejd. West 12, Turua 3.

In the early stages of the final quarter a scrum was' ordtered from which Swann cleared, but play returned jto West’s twenty-five. The Turua forwards followed' through and M. Madgwick scored a> good tiy. Thrupp’s kick failed. 12, Turua 6. With time drawing close, and following a force, West started a nice passing rush headed 1 , by Fraser for Lockett to register his second trySwann failed to convert, and the game ended West 15, Turua 6. Mr T. C. Arnold was referee.
