PAEROA GOLF CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR.

The 20th annual meeting of the Paeroa Golf Club was hehj last evening, when tile president, Mr •A. F. Steedman, occupied the chair.

REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The report and balance-sheet ware read as follows :—

“Membership.— The membership allows an increase of .13 over the previous year, and is now 69, of whom 20 ( ar& men players, 32 lady players, and 17 non-players. Five of the latter are men and 12 ladies. The club would welcome additional players, and every member is asked to endeavour to induce new members to join.

“Financial.—The club commenced its season with a credit balance of £l4 o's 8d and closes with a credit balance of £2O 18s. Subscriptions last year amounted to £72, while this year £lll 10s has already been collected, and in addition outstanding subscriptions due, at tlie end of last season amounting to £6 13s have been paid ilk The sum of £l4 remains outstanding at the end of this season, and members who sti'll owe subscriptions are asked to iriake an early settlement. The assets arc shown at £124 3s 6d, as against £lO6 10s 6p at the close of last season.

“Expenditure.— Your committee found it necessary at the commencement of the season to. improve the crossings ovqr the gullies, and has erected suitable bridges. A number of new posts have been put in the green fences, five of the rollers have been fittejd with new handles, boxes with sand tins have been place 1 at the various tees, and new tees, at No. 6 were formed. The various costs axe set out in the expenditure account. A new mower was purchased at a cost of £7 5s to replace the one previously in use and which is now almost totally worn put. A supply of 500 ladies’ cards have been pri’nted at :a cost of £3 ss, and most of these are on hand. The club engaged the services of a coach, covering a period of two weeks during the season, at a total cost of £l7 13s 6d. Of this amount £l2 2s was recovered-from members, and the ladies’ social committee contributed £3 3s, leaving a total net cost to the club of £2 8s 6d.

“Links and Fairways.—The greeinkeeper was instructed to commence' mowing the greens; immediately the fine weather broke, and this lhaJs. been -done from the, beginning of March with very good results. The greens, in fact, will .require very little attention to bring them into good playing cond'tion. An inspection of the links lias been madq, and the central area of the course is already in fair playing condition, but the outside areas will require a, considerable amount of work to make them playable. This is especially so in the case of Nos. 2,4, 5, and 6. Very little can be done to these until the autumn growth ceases. The greenkeeper has been instructed to repair green fences and distribute the sand-boxes.

“Social.—During the season a team of men players from Hamilton, were entertained here. A feature of the social s ide. of the club’s activities has been the holding , of social evenings during the winter months, and the club’s appreciation of the ladies’ efforts in this direction is merited.

“Matches.—The following are the results of the various matches :—

“Ladies: Club' Championship, Mrs R. L. Miller ; Club Handicap, Mrs F. Hubbard ; L-G.U. Medals, Mrs F. Hubbard (2), Miss G. Gibb (1), Miss M. Thorp (1), Miss F. Walmsley (1), and Mrs R. L. Miller (1). “Trophies, were presented by : Mni R. L. M'ller, won by Mrs F. Hubbard ; Mrs W. W. Little, won by Miss G. Gibb ; Mri F. Hubbard, won by Mrs R. L. Miller'; Mirs Gilbert Smith, won by Miss I. Masters ; Mrs, W. L. Lawrence, won by Mrs R. L. Miller ; Miss M. Thorp (foursome), won by Miss Walmsley and Mrs, Lawrence; Club, won by Miss T'erney.

“Men: Club Championship, not held; Club Handicap, H. R. Thorp ; Monthly Medals, R. L. Miller (2), P. R. Hubbard (1), H. Thorp (1) ; senior and junior match, T. Moresby.

“Thanks.—The club places on record its thanks, to the ladies for the way afternoon tea has been served, especially at the opening and clo.sing, President’s day, and theflHamilton team’s visit. Our thanks are also, due to the Oihinemuri Jockey Club for the use of dining room arid accessories in the pavilion ; to the; Hauiraki Plains Gazette for printing results of matches, and to Mr E. Shaw for the many courtesies shown and assistance given. The club also -places on, record its appreciation, of work carred out by members in preparing the fairways, especially so to Mr R; L. Miller, who d'id a considerable amount of necessary scything.” 1 The receipts for the year were : Balance from last season, £l4 ; members’ fees, £lll 10s ; golf lessons, refunds, £l2 2s; lockers, £1 4s; outstanding subscription®, £6 13s ; sun. dries, £5 10s 6d.

The expenditure was : Rent, £lO ; cutting greens and fairways, £5O 2s; sundries,- £ll 17s 9d timber, £2 13s lid ; mower, etc., £7 8s ; printing and advertising, £5 5s ; affiliations, £4 10s 6d ; coach, £l7 13s 6d ; tea money, £l2 8s; trophies, £5 10s 6d; entertainment, £2 13s; leaving a credit balance of £2O 18s.

The assets consisted of: Bank balance, £2O 18s ; Post Office Savings Bank, £53 4s 6d ; rollers, £l6 10s ; mower and sundries, £2O 15s; outstanding subscriptions and fees, £l4 6s ; making a total of £125 13s 6d. The only liability was. for some ladies’ medals. On the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Hedge, the report and balance-sheet were adopted. OFFICERS. OPENING DAY. The date of opening the links was left to the committee, as the links at present were too much ovargrown , witli fresh grass. COACH. Mr H. Bray advocated ‘ getting a. reajly good coach. He thought that to have a really good man was the life of the club. It was the only way to make the club. Membars went out and soon got. tired of the game if they were not instructed. Mr Hedge said ‘he .was thoroughly in accord with Mr Bray on the inat- , ter of getting a good coach. A recommendation was passed by the meet’ng that the committee engage the services of a flrstrdasfe coach. » GENERAL. Three new members were proposed. The president expressed ihi.s regret that two prominent members of the alub were absent on account of illness, namely, Mr Ei W. Porritt, a life member, and M*' C. D. Topliss. He hoped they would sooji be restored to health and be active members this yeau. THE LADIES’ CLUB. At a generalmeeting of the Ladies’, Golf Club, held after thq general annual meeting, the following elect'ons were made: President, Mi® E. W. Porritt; captain and secretary,'Mrs W. i,. Lawrence; committee, Mesdames F. Hubbard, E. Edwards, J, W. Silcock. C. D. Topliss, and Miss M. Thorp.

A vote of thanks was passeid to the resigning secretary, Miss A. Argafll, , for work done during thei past year:
