The second day of the Ohineinuri Jockey Club’s annual meeting is being held to-day. The weather is fine, with a stiff easterly wind prevailing. A large crowd of people was .in the streets this morning, and! a good attendance at the course is. assured.

Some amunsement was caused in Normanby Road, Paeroa. on. Saturday afternoon, when two Maori women had an. altercation which ended in a bout of fisticuffs. One woman was of a particularly heavy type, while the other was femaller and much younger. Just when matters were getting interesting a, young man stepped in to separate the pair, but the big- woman immediately turned her attention to him, and she got iii several heavy blows before he was able to beat a hasty, if 'somewhat undignified retreat. Later the two women were seen sitting on. a vacant section, happily talking to a crowd of other natives.

Ifl the Hauraki United Drainage Board continues to reveiVe its decisions in the future with tile frequency of its past few meetings, members will be faced with a. difficulty in explaining the'r attitude tp ratepayers in November next when the election is held. However, as one member comments, everyone is getting so isick and tired of drains that they wish they .had never seen one, so possibly the matter will not trouble the present members.

The difference ’twixt the pipe ?md the ciga.rette is as well marked as that between a. sandwich and a grilled steak. Hence, while the cigarette has numberless votaries,, the pipe, because it is so satisfying, has many more. Seasoned smokers say there is. nothing to equal ai pipe for solid comfort and enjoyment. But the tobacco must be good, and not loaded with nicotine as the imported brands usually are. Our own New Zealandgrown tobaccos are; the purest, and being comparatively free from nicotine they are greatly appreicated by smokers, who find they can smoke them for hours at a time without burning their tongues, or experiencing other unpleasant consequences. It interesting to note that these tobaccos are all toasted ir the process of manufacture, and to the toasting must be attributed the wonderful flavour and delightful aroma that characterises them. The principal brands are Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium ; and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bulls.head), full strength. All toasted, and every tobacconist stocks them.*
