The Paeroa Cricket Club’s .combined team won the Bowler Shield from Waitoa at Waitoa by seven wickets and eleven runs. The handsome trophy is at present on view in the Window of Mr D. McWatters’.
A middle-aged labourer, a first offender, appeared ’ before Mr F. E. Flatt, J.P., at the local Police Court this morning .charged with drunkenness in Paeroa oh Saturday. As he did not appear he forfeited the amount of his bail, £l.
A mob of breeding ewes and lambs totalling 3300 passed through Paeroa yesterday morning, en route to Tuakau. Leaving Gisborne seven weeks ago, the, sheep, in the charge of three drovers, .have been brought along in easy stages, and despite the long distance i.t is worthy of note that only two ewes have died. The drovers expected to reach their destination this afternoon..
About a d' :, zen horses are at present being trained on the local racecourse. J. W. Cathro has the fiilty Auriculus, owned bv Mr J. H- Walters, and Mauriaena, a full-sister to Auriculusf; a two-year-old colt named-Hiata, and a half-sister to Miss Potoa. which is owned by Mr E. Edwards. The other horses, in work are Scat, Miss Egypt, Billikins, Ohincmuri, Venus Abbey,, and Gold Clip.
On Friday evening the \ work of ’bituminising Puke R</ad was completed, and Messrs Thomas Bros’, service ear was the first vehicle to pass right through. On Saturday lower Hill Street was taken in hand and bituminised- The completion of the work in these .two streets makes nearly five miles of bituminising that has been done since the beginning of tiiis summer.
.. On account of the heavy motor traffic and risk of accidents to children the Paeroa District High. School Comhiittee has' decided-, in accordance wlitli its usual custom, to grant a whole holiday on Monday, March 19, the second day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s meeting.
Mr McLaughlan advises that he is leaving the district and wishes to dispose of his household furniture, and is selling privately during this week at his residence, Thames Road. A full] list- will appear in our next issue.* \
A Leap-Year Ball, organised by the Young Ladies’ Committee, comprising Misses ,L- Alley, W. Avery, E’. White, A. Morrison, L. Thompson,, E. Hopping, and N. Capper (secretary), was held in the Hikutaia Hall on Wednesday last. Firns and coloured streamers made an effective decoration. Nga-< tea, Waitakaruru, Thames, Waini Te Aroha, and Paeroa Were well represented, and about 250 couples graced tlie floor to the strains of music supplied by the W’.w'hi Dixie Boys’ Orchestra. Tlie duties of M.C. were carried out by Misses E. White and L. Thompson in a most efficient manner Extras were played by Misses L. Vincent and E. White and Mrs. Laurent. The young iladies are to be congratulated on the wav they carried out their ai rangements to make tlie affair the success it was.
