PLAINS COUNTY FOREMAN
SERVICES TO BB DISPENSED WITH
DECISION OF COUNCIL.
At the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council .held yesterday Cr. Parfitt mentioned. that the appointment of Mr R- H. Cameron would terminate at the end of the present month, and asked if his services wo'uid be retained. He wished to hear an expression of opinion by councillors, as he felt that an inspector could be obtained very much more bheaply than at present, while, the policy of lettipg work by did away with the necessity of a foreman. , He did not want to be hard, and would therefore move that Mr Cameron be given three months’ notice of termination of his employment. >
Mr Fisher expressed the opinion that a foreman was necessary for the ordinary maintenance work.
Other councillors argued that a foreman was necessary, and a recital of his duties prompted comments by others that as an overseer Mr Cameron was satisfactory, but the inspection work was not'being given proper attention. The chairman pointed out that beyond maintenance the council had reading programme, and therefore an?, expensive foreman was hot necessary, though an inspector was much needed. As an inspector Mr Cameron was not satisfactory. Mr Madgwick argue'd that neither job .was big enough to warrant the appointment of a separate man. The motion was seconded by Cr. Walton. Cr. Madgwick moved as an amend-, ment that Mr Cameron’s services be retained until such time as the engineer reported that no overseer was necessary. Seconded by Cr. Fisher. The amendment was defeated on the votes of Crs. Harris, Miller, Parfitt, Hicks, and Walton, and the motion was carried on a similar division.

He states that many of the wellknown American brands are so rich in nicotine that ,tney are best avoided, because their constant use is bound to cause nerve trouble. He considers ismoking may be actually beneficial under the proper conditions. His advice to smokers is: “Select a brand that while satisfying your ’tobacco hunger’ Is yet practically free from nicotine?’ But it is not always 4&v to find such tobaccos. However, v?e certainly have them right here in New Zealand. They are grown and the leaf is cured and manufactured, for the market within the Dominion. 1 In fact, tobacco culture and manufacture now constitute one of our most promising industries. Moreover, our ' New Zealand-grown tobaccos are ao pure and relatively so free from nicotine that they quite fulfil the Italian specialist’s conditions. They may be obtained from any tobacconist. iAsk for Riverhead Gold, mild; Navy Cut 1 (Bulldog), medium; or Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), fun strength.*
