WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

■PROGRESS IN, OHINEMUIII.

REPORT BY ENGINEER.

The following report was submitted by the acting-engineer (Mr L. E. Sha,w) -at Thursday’s meeting of the Ohineniuri County Council: “ Kaim.ana.wa . Riding. — Ordinary maintenance has been carried, out in tlrs riding. The old wooden bridge on the Ferry Road across Alexander’s Drain has been removed, and the drain Hilled in.

.“ Waihi Riding.—The workmen in this area have been employed full t me on the Waihi-Wai'tewheta. Road, and a considerable improvement is shown. A wooden bridge on Trig Road will require to be redecked at an early. The proposals for metalling portion of Pukewera Road have been approved by the Public Works Department, and tendters will be called for this work immediately. ■ ■“ Waikino Riding.—The council’s truck has been employed part of the month me railing portion of the Waitawheta Road, and also part of the Waitekauri-Waihi Road between the Waikino and Waitekauri Ridings. An old bridge on, the Waihl-Waitawheta Road has been replaced by a new bridge. “ Mangaiti Riding.—All roads and bridges \ are in good order, the time during most of the month being given to main highways. “Hamilton-Paeroa Main Highway. During the month the roller and grader irave. been working on this length of road grading in the shoulders. This work should have been well under way but on account of the roller having to . come ..back to the yard for the annuel boiler inspection, the work has been held up. The inspection of the roller proved very satisfacotry, a, very g°od report being received from the inspector. A pipe culvert near Mr Mace’s fam has been replaced with a set of 2ft. concrete pipes;. , “ All other main highways have nad usual maintenance.

Re Mr Peter Vlahovich’s aPPl ica ’ tion to have the old road Reading to his property at Paeroa put jn order I wish to. state that I have inspected the road and find that about 8 chains of side cutting is in need of attention. Mr Vlaihovich is willing to do the repairs at less than the estfinated cost- ■ After a brief discussion in the course of which Crs. Hubbard andj Johnstone advocated 1 giving some assistance to the applicant) it was resolved that the engineer to authorised to expend up to* ,£6 on providing an access.

, “ Old Te Arolia Road. —With reference to the petition received from the settlers on this road, I have made an inspection of the portion referred to. On the southern side between the Rotokoihu, Stream Bridge and the top of the hill there are ten bridges, all of which require attention. The timber for this work would cost approximately £65, and about £35 spent ,in reconditioning the road would make it passable for ordinary traffic. The portion on the northern side requires to be generally rounded up, water channels and culverts need opening for the full length, and three new 9in. culverts put ip. Approximately £4O would be required to do the necessary work, making a total cost of £l4O.

A long discussion followed, and in the opinion of the chairman it would be a ■ wise policy to adopt the engineer’s recommendations. The source of the trouble appeared to. be that there was not sufficient clearance for water under the bridges. It was a question of repairing the bridges, which were in a serious state bf disrepair. or pulling them down altogether. It Vwas necessary to keep the road open for traffic, but it would cost too much to ever make a motor road of it.

It was finally decided! that the engineer be authorised to proceed with repairs to the bridges, and that Mr Costello be asked to cart metal for the northern side of th© road 1 .
