UNEMPLOYED AT WAIHI.

WORK FOUND FOR MEN.

GRANTS MADE BY GOVERNMENT.

For some time past the unemployment question at Waihi has beeni causing the Mayor (Mr W. M. Wallnutt) and the secretary of the Miners’ Union (Mr W. Bice) some concern. In order to obtain relief the help of Mr A- M. Samuel, M.P., was sought, and his efforts to date have been very successful. After making representations to the Minister of Public Works 20 married men were placed in| work on the Waihi-Whangamata road. There are still a number of. married men and single men with dependants out of ,w ol ’k, and on their behalf Mr Samuel made further to the Government. On Wednesday afternoon he received the following telegram from the Minister of Public Works :—

“Have authorised £5OO for the Waihi-Whangamata i-°ad and £750 for the Waitawheta road. These sums, with the £l2OO previously authorised for the southern end! of the WaihiWnangamata road, should be sufficient to absorb all necessitous cases. Arrangements are being made for unemployed to register at post officer at places such as Waihi, where the Labour Department has no direct repretsentatioh.”

In addition to providing work, the money granted will help considerably to construct reasonably good road's. In the Waitawheta, especially, the lack of reading facilities has placed the settlers under a great hardship, and the £750 authorised will materially assist in providing a reasonably good r°ad to their farms. Credi't is due to Mr Samuel for the whole-hearted manner in which he has taken up the cause of the unemployed men, and he has earned their grateful thanks as well as those of the settlers.
