Keen interest over a wide area, is being taken in the cripket match between teams representing Auckland and Paeroa and district at Paeroa today. Early this morning enthusiasts arrived from Hauraki Plains), Thames, and Waihi, and it is confidently expected' that this afternoon, when the visitors are. batting, there will be a big crowd of people at the domain.
The Hauraki Plains County Council has been advised that its applicat’ons to the Local Government Loans Board far permission to proceed l with the proposals to raise loans of £5OOO for the metalling of roads in the Ngatea riding and of £.900 for the metalling ‘of Ngataipua Road, Kopuarahi, • has been granted.
An, advertisement of particular interest to housewives appears bn the first page of this issue.. In an opening announcement the Housewives’ Relief Stores advise a new system of deposit order accounts. These accounts are opened on receipt of, £5 and upwards to be renewed as exhausted. An immediate bonus of 6d in the £ is allowed on sums of £5 and multiples of £5 deposited in prepayment of goods. Full details will be supplied on application.
’The annual picnic of the Paeroa District High School is, to take place at Tc Aroha on Friday. Parents 'and friends are cordially invited: to attend, and are advised that the party will leave the Paeroa railway station by the. 20 minutes to 8 train and leave Te Aroha on the return journey at 20 minutes to 7 in the evening. The gathering will take place at the Herries Memorial Park, and the Te Arolia. Borough Council is co-operating with the. local committee in making the day a memorably happy one. The special train fares are: Adults Is 6d, children 15 to 19 years Is Id', and others 9d return. ,
A haystack, containing, about 30 tons of hay, on the farm of Mr A. J. Andrews, Rawerawe, wa!s, destroyed by fire on Sunday .last. The hay was stacked early in December but the stack was made very wide, and- it was noticed to have heated so considerably that spontaneous combustion was expected unless; the width was reduced to permit the heat to escape.
Queensland, is the only country in the world where the sugar industry is carried on by white labour, Ejaid the Hon. W. Forgan Smith at Christchurch. The perpetuation of the “ White Australia ” policy, he added, was to-day beyond controversy ; it was the definitely established and final principle of the Australian people. In the sugar industry it had been a complete success, and the white people engaged in the industry produced a ton of sugar from fewer tons of, cane than anywhere else in the world.
A huge rock face in Mr W. A. Smeed’s quarry on the river between Tuakau and Mercer was shattered! on Saturday afternoon by 754 tons of high explosive. The “shot” brought down between 120',000 and 150,00'0 tons of metal, sufficient to keep the crushers supplied for over two years. The explosives alone cost about £llOO, and the aggregate cost of the blast was about £2OOO. The cliff which was blown up was nearly 100 ft in height.
Fifty children faced d'rowning in nearly six feet of water when t'he launch staging collapsed at Kaiapoi on Saturday during the progress* of a regatta. Some of the children became terrified and many women in the crowd shrieked. However, iron pipes below the staging prevented it from sinking more than two feet, and all the children were rescued without much difficulty by motorboats and those on shore.
