HAURAKI DRAINAGE.
C UNITED BOARD’S MEETING. The Hauraki United Drainage Board met at Turua °n Friday last, Mr S. S. Murray presiding over Messrs H. H. Hicks, W. McDuff, F. A. Kneebone, F. L. Hamilton, J. M. Thompson, J. C. Miller, and l the clerk, Mr T. D. Wallace. PROPOSED LOAN WORKS. The chairman reported having interviewed the lands drainage engineer with reference to the additional works decided upon’ recently. tOn the whole Mr Taylor had approved of the programme. He had urged that the board defer the Wharepoa Road floodgate until after the coming winter, when the present outlet could be given a thorough trial. He was of the opinion that monfey should not be spent on. improving the Te Kauri No. 2 drain. SUBSIDY RECEIVED. The Public Works Department adsvised that a cheque for £919 14s 5d had been deposited in the board’s account.
JOHNSTONE’S DRAIN
It was decided that tenders be called for improving Johnstone’s drain rfom. the floood-gate to the high land* ORONGO BOUNDARY EXTENSION. A long argument ensued! concerning the proposal to extend the Orongo boundary drain. Mr Miller advocated extending it to the northern side of Ngataipua Road, whereasi the board’s decision was to tap the southern roadside drain. Mr Miller could not convince members and the previous decision was endorsed, Mr Miller dissenting on a notice of motion being ruled out of order when a seconder was not forthcoming. Tile proposed notice of motion provided that a culvert would be installed later if found; desirable. FLUMING OUTLETS. Two tenders .were received for the installation of fluminig in the outlets to the Piako River known as Kneebone’s, Shellbank, and Miller’s, apd the tender of 'McConnell and Gardiner, of Turua, was accepted, the total cost being £745. WHAREPOA ROAD CLEANING.
Five tenders were received for the cleaning of the two Wharepoa Road •drains; and those of McConnell and Sainsbury at 4s 6d for the north-side and H. Tipa at 5s for the south-side were accepted. PRICE’S OUTLET. Two tenders were received Tor cleaning and improving Price’s outlet, and that of H. Tipa at 10s per chain was accepted. » KOPUARAHLKEREPEEHI ROAD. Tenders are to be calledf or improving the Kerepeehi-Kopuarahi roadside drain, east side, from: Price’s outlet southward for about 30 1 chains. ANNUAL CLEANING. The question of calling tenders for the annu'al cleaning was discussed, and it wasileft to the chairman and officials to' decide what .works should be advertised. A special meeting will be held to let the contracts. \ / FOREMAN’S. REPORT.
The foreman, Mr E. El a veil, reported that work on the No.. 1 Te Kauri dlrain was progressing satisfactorily. a The No. 1 contract had been delayed on account of. the outfall drain, but ‘Nos. 2 and 3 contracts were progressing well. The Wharepoa roadside improvements would be completed in a few days. -Spoil had been removed from outside the Te Kauri No. 1 stopbank. Part of the from the flood-gate to T. Scott’s orchard had' been done.
TE KAURI No. 1 CONTRACT'. 1 The chairman stated that the contractor 'had complained that the bottom of the Te Kauri No. 1 drain was not 6ft, as shown on the. plans, but only 3ft or 3ft 6ins, so there was a much greater quantity of spoil to excavate. Members pointed out that the surveying was done in mid-winter. As it was found by an examination of the Hauraki Board’s, records that the drain had a 3ft bottom about a a year before amalgamation.it was obvious that a mistake had been made, and a committee was appointed! to confer with the contractors, with power to act. LOUCH-McDUFF FLOOD-GATE. The foreman reported that the channel outside the Louch-iMcDuff flood-gate was silted up. ' The chairman: stated that the Lands Department had promised to sluice out the channel,
It was decided to communicate with the lands drainage engineer on the subject. PI AKO STOP-BANK DRAIN. The lands drainage engineer,'Kerepeehi, advised that any slips or damage caused to the stop-bank drain fronting Mr Hayward’s property would! be removed as soon as possible. WHAREPOA ROAD FLOOD-GATE. The chairman reported having interviewed the Public Works Department with reference to an additional flood-gate at Wharepoa Road. The stop-bank' would not be continued beyortd Porritt’s outlet, and the department would not recommend that a subsidy be granted the board if it did the. work. HAMILTON’S ROAD CULVERT. The Hauraki Plains County Council advised that no objection would be raised to placing a culvert under Road. z WHAREPOA ROAD DRAIN. Mr R. L. Davis waited upon the board, which granted his request for the deepening of the Wharepoa Road west-side drain from the old Horahia boundary to the Kerepeehi cornier. Tenders would be called. HAURAKI ROAD DRAIN. The Turua Town Board advised that it was of opinion that no; damage would accrue to the Hauraki roadside drain where, as a consequence of. a small quantity of spoil, being placed upon the bank where the Town Board had graded off the water-tables of the road, and therefore regretted that it could not accept any responsibility for any slips which might occur. Formal notice was then given that
the Town Board would require the Drainage Board to have all spoil from this drain placed on the paddock side and not on the 'roadside.
The chairman reported that all the spoil would shortly be removed. The Town Board’s requirements would have to be noted when contracts were next let. HAURAKI BOARD’S ACCOUNTS. Mr J. E. Green, late clerk of the Hauraki Drainage Board, forwarded an account from P. Gilchrist, solicitor, Te Aroha, for legal advice given that board concerning subdivisions, subdi visional representation, rating on loans expended, outside benefits, classification and subdivision of properties, amalgamation, etc. /The amount was £l5 15s, and the account was certified as correct by the late chairman, Mr G. Gray, and the late clerk, Mr J. E. Green. The account was passed for payment.
