OBITUARY.

MRS. ELLEN BARRETT. One of the oldest and most respected residents of. Ohinemuri, in the person of Mrs Ellen Barrett, passed away at her residence, Waihi Road, Paeroa, on Wednesday morning. Deceased who was 72 years of age, arrived at Paeroa about 50 years ago, and. had been actively associated with the district since her arrival. Her husband, Mr James Barrett, who predeceased her about 20 months ago, was one of the first prospectors to discover gold at Owharoa, and later opened and developed the Smile of Fortune gold mine at Owharoa. Deceased had had bad health for the last ten months, and had been confined, to her bed during the greater part of that time. She leaves a grown-up family of five sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. The sons are Messrs John Barrett, postmaster, Symonds Street, Auckland ; Thomas Barrett, Paeroa; William Barrett, assistant traffic inspector, N.Z. Railways, Frankton Junction ; James Barrett, Paeroa; and Daniel Barrett, Auckland. The daughter is Mrs G. Collins, Albert Street, Onehunga.

Deceased was, interred at the Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, this afternoon, the Rev. Father J. T. Taylor performing the last solemn rites.; The large number of floral emblems bore silent testimony to the esteem in which deceased was held in the district.
