Working profits earned by the New Zealand railways during the four weeks ended January 7 amounted to £183,056, which is £10,607 less than in the corresponding period of the previous year and £56,015 less than in the December period of 1925. For the 40' weeks of the current financial year the working profits have been £785,565, as. against £947,609 last year and £996,667 in 1925-26.
Searchers for blackberries on the Hauraki Plains have beeni disappointed this season, as the berries are much harder to> find than the number of bushles; indicate. The dry season has tempted many farmers to destroy the .weeds by fire, :and the lack of rain probably also acmunfe; for the extreme smallness of the berriesMany bushes have been attacked with a blight resembling fire-blight.
Prior to the commencement of busis neiss at Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital. Board the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale), said that since the board’s last meeting one of the most papular and earnest working members of the staff had died. He refer--I‘teid to the passing of Nurse J'. M. Jar j rett, laet district nurse to natives-' He could conscientiously state, and felt sure, he was expressing the unanimous opinion of the board, that the late Nurse Jarrett had given) wonderful service. She had not only cared lovingly for Natives, but had frequently gone miles out of her way into the backblocks to attend and care for white women. Nurse Jarrett had been a true friend to the board,and was loved and respected by all with whom she came in contact. He moved that a. letter of condolence' be forwarded to the relatives in England. The resolution was carried in silence, thie members, standing.
At Monday night’s meeting of the Hauraki A. and P. Association at Paeroa Mr W. F. Johnstone mentioned that the secretary of the Kawakawa Show had organised and obtained no less than twelve gold cups for competition at the recenlt A l , and P. Show at Kawakawa.
A successful dance was organised by the Ngatea Swimming Club and held in the Ngatea Hall last evening. There was a good attendance, dancers being present from all parts of the county. The music was supplied by Mrs. Barriball’s orchestra, and Mr E. C. Barriball was M.C.
