WORKS IN THE BOROUGH
STREET IMPROVEMENTS. REPORT BY COMMITTEE. The following report on the work carried out since the last meeting of the council was. submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council meeting la,st evening by the Works Committee :— “During the three weeks since our last meeting the mem ha ve been concentrated as much as. ■ possible on street improvement work.
“Te Arotiai Road. —From Dr. Little’s garage to the boundary has been? completed in two-coat bitumen sealing work. Mr Hedge’s crossing to this street was also bituminised at his; ex-: pense, and wei think that Mr Hedge is to be congratulated on the civic pride evidenced by the improvements he has made on the strejet frontage of his property; where thg footpath hasi been entirely constructed by him. “Mo°re Road—This street has been resurfaced with bitumen 'in the same manner as Te Aroha Road, including the Hill Street intersection, which- it was formerly not intended to do.
“Waihi and Upper Normanby Roads. —This gection from Mr Robson’s store to the borough boundary isi now nearly completed in bitumen surfacing. Owing to very heavy damage, this portion is proving a much'more expensive job.
“The railway crossing on Te Aroha Road and the strip fronting the station have been done in conformity with the adjacent areas, and a further application has been made to the department for payment of this amount. A "Puke. Road Main Drain Concrete Culvert.—Plans and specifications have been prepared of this work and are on the table to-night. It is estimated to cost in all £485. “Since our last meeting a resolution has been passed by the Highways Boa,rd which places boroughs with a population of less than 6000 on the same footing as counties. Application has now been made f°r a subsidy from the board of £ for £ on the proposed culvert, and £ for £ on the bitumen work which remained to be done on February 1. If these are successful the borough will receive very urgently needed assistance. “Portion of the 4-inch water main (has been laid across the Te Aroha, bridge, and wherever necessary .water repairs have received prompt attention, while every effort is being made to prevent any waste by consumers.
“With the council’s approval, it is proposed to continue ,the, bituminising work/in ;the, following order, if possible : Belmont Road near Paeroa Hotel, Lower Hill Street, and Puke Road.
“Notice has been received that the £ for £ subsidy will be paid on the work done on footpaths round the post office. We recommend that when convenient this path should receive one coat of spraymex. This will complete the job and enable the council to test this particular class of -work.”
