POLICE COURT.

PAEROA, THIS MORNING. (Before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M.) A sitting of the Paeroa. Police Court was, held this morning, Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., presiding, when the following cases were dealt with:— BREACH OF PROHIBITION ORDERA first offender was charged, with procuring liquor while being a prohibited person. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant D. R. Calweil conducted the prosecution. It was stated by Mr Porritt that defendant had had a strenuous time travelling and arranging for his, contracts. On the day in question he visited Hikutaia in. an endeavour to arrange; for workmen and drivers. He much regretted his fall from grace, and had learned a lesson 'he ,was never likely to forget. Defendant was convicted and fined ■£3. DRIVING WITHOUT LICENSE. J. H. Evans, sawmillejr, Paeroa,. was charged with driving a motor lorry in the borough without having first obtained a heavy traffic license. He pleaded guilty. Mr C. N. O’Neill appeared for the Paeroa Borough Council and said that the borough officials had used thejir best endeavours to get defendant to take Out a license and so avoid pro-, ceedings • After nearly 12 months, during, which period heavy carting had been done, the council was, forced to take action. The amount of, the fee under classification was £2B, and there was also £l4> owing from the previous year for fees. . Mr Carden, solicitor, for defendant, suggested that ah adjournment should be granted. Defendant had over £2OO owing to him, but was at present short of money. There had also been a fire at the mill. Defendant was possessed of honest intentions, and would pay the council in full.

Mr O’Neill said the municipal authorities were ’heartily sick of the promises, made by defendant. ■ The magistrate thought that possibly an adjournment , should be, agreed upon.

Mr O’Neill objected, and said he had to carry out the council’s instructions.

The magistrate said he was prepar; ed to go on. It was evident that'defendant had deliberately used his unregistered lorry, and by sio doing had damaged- the streets. He had also failed to pay the balance of the fee for the previous year. Defendant was convicted and fined £lO, plus £2 12s costs. A fortnight was allowed in which to find the money. EXEMPTION FROM ; DRILL. Francis C. Burt, motor-driver, Pae-, roa claimed exemption from military training on the grounds that as a. motor-driver employed. at a. local garage 'he was required: from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, from 2.-p.m. to 5.3'5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. on. week-days, and from .10 a.m. until 4'p.m. on Sundays. ■-

Sergeant-Major A. Steward represented the Defence Department, and opposed the application. I.t was suggested that the applicant should be prepared to undertake a nine days’ camp in lieu of attending the night parades.

The magistrate said that applicant would have to 'carry out one system or the; other. He would adjourn the case for one month to enable t'he applicant to go further' into) the matter with his employers.
