STREET LIGHTS. z
Ngatea township is to be without its street lights until such time as their benefit is sufficiently appreciated. A meeting on Wednesday evening decided to instruct the Power Board to cut off the lights as a means of impressing op the residents of the district the fact that each light costs £3 a year, and that subscriptions are needed to pay off last year’s account. Subscriptions* promised annually have not been coming to hand, and in any ease, it is felt that the burden, has not been distributed fairly, so the lights are to be cut off until the financing is put on a proper basis. A thorough canvass is to be made. THE SWIMMING CLUB.
The Ngatea Swimming Club is making steady progress* and members are having a great deal of enjoyment, but the executive is worried over the financial, position. A small account was incurred for timber, with which the two dressing-shads wore constructed, and, as a means of raising the balance owing,’ a drive is to be made for further members and a dance is to be held.
The club, at a meeting onj Wednesday evening at which Mr J. E. Reid presided over an attendance of 20 members, decided to have a boom installed at thq swimming-place to facilitate the instruction of those not able to swim. The club has accepted the offers of several of its who, are competent to tqach children to swim and in whom parents can place reliance, and when the boom and its fittings are installed the club ’hopes to be of service to the district by teaching all. who become members the art of swimming.
