WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
UNDERTAKINGS IN JANUARY. OHINEMURI ENGINEER’S REPORTMr L. E. Shaw, acting engineer for the lOhinemuri County Council, supplied the. following report on work carried out, during the month, to the council, meeting yesterday: — ' “Paeroa Riding.—All roads and bridges have received attention. “Kaimanawa Riding.— ordinary maintenance has been carried out. “Wai’hi Riding.—All metal roads have received attention and are in a very satisfactory state. The grader has been working most of this period on the unformed roads, and as the services of an experienced team and workmen were secured, advantage was taken to have as much Of this work done as possible “Several bridges which were in need of repair have been attended to, with the exception of the Willows bridgei on Leopold’s Road. This bridge is badly in need, of repairs, but the bridge on the tramline, now used as the road, is in much better birder, and with a Tittle reconditioning would serve the purpose better than the present one. I would recommend that this work be put in hand, and as thi? bridge is on the boundary the Waihi Borough would be sharing the cost. “Waikinb Riding.—Very little attention has been given to rdads in this riding, the workmen’s time being taken up with repairs to the writer supply and bridges. A fire, which yas started in the vicinity of the pipeline between the dam and the reservoir spread to the pipe-line, and in several gullies the trestles carrying the pipes were burnt, allowing the pipes to fall and in several cases to break, thus cutting the supply off from Waikino. " Immediate attention was given to, have the necessary ie pairs carried out, and credit is due to the workmen for thei quick time in which'this work was done. It will be necessary to renew approximately 1000 ft of the 6-inch maim Pipes for this purpose have beesn ordered, and the work will be put in hand as soon as the. present dry spell is broken. “Mangaiti Riding.—All roads and bridges have received attention and arei in a satisfactory state. An account has come to hand this day from the Piako County Council, being for a sum of £72 8s Bd,\this council’s share of the cost of repairs to the Mangaiti bridge. “Pokeno-Waihi Main Highway.—A good deal of work has been done on this road, but owing to the excessive holiday . traffic' and the dry weather most o£ the work has been undone. The gravel 1 , which was put on out of the river pits, is . piled up onl both sides bit the formation,- an 1 until such time as the, weather conditions change ■it will be useless to put this gravel back. The Waitekauri Stream bridge has been redecked with 4-inch decking and several stringers renewed. “Hamilton-Paeroa Main Highway.— This portion of road is also showing signs of the extra traffic. The roller anld grader have been sent to Mangaiti and a start has been made to grade in the shoulders. A quantity of fine metal will be required between Tirohia and Paeroa. • “Paeroa-Kopu Main Highway. The council’si truck has been employed on this road carting sand and blinding, the formation in places bqinig badly cut up. The old wooden bridge near Mr Walter* Wights farm has been replaced with a new and much more substantial structure. The bridge over the; Kurere creek has also been redecked with 3-inch cross-decking and 3-inch running decking. “Paeroa Water Supply-—On account of the urfusually dry spell during the past month restrictions had to be placed on the use of the water from the; Paeroa water supply. Consumers having leaky trough or taps were warned, and in cases where the warning had been ignored the supply was cut off until the necessary repairs were made. Prior to these steps being taken the water-level in the dam had bqen considerably and was becoming lower every day, but since taking these (precautions the water-level has made up gradually, and conditions at the headworks at present are very satisfactory. “The contract fpir 'forming the access road to Green’s Creek dam site is now,'complete, and a very satisfactory Sob has been donq by the contractor, Mr W. H. Shaw.”
