FAREWELL TO VICAR.
FUNCTIONS ON THE PLAJINSL PRESENTATIONS. TO REV- AVERILL A public farewell was tendered the Rev. and Mrs Averill by the people of. Ngatea in the hall on Thursday evening last. The function took the form of a dance, and there was a large attendance. After the supper interval Mr C. S'. Foster, on behalf of the people of the district ihanded Rev. Averill a substantial cheque and exprcssied regret at his departure • but joy at his promotion to the charge of am important city parish. Rev. Averill, he said, lida done splendid work and had made many friends. He had led the Ngatea people to decide to build a church, and by his organisation a site had been secured and paid for- The people of Ngatea hoped that he would be present when the church was being opened. In replying, the Rev. Averill, thanked the organisers of the function for, the opportunity given him of meeting his friends for the purpose of saying farewell. He had had a very pleasant two years in the district, and his work had not bepn difficult because all his efforts had been so ably backfed up by the people. He urged that the spme support be., accorded his successor, the Rev. D. Maddison, who would arrive in threjei, weeks’ time. Referring tpi the Ngatea. church, Mr Averill expressed the hope that the building would be completed by the end of the present yejar. He was looking forward to being present at the opening service. He wished to thank the ladies of the guild for all their dxcejllent work, and particularly the secretary. 1 The people then sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” and gave cheers foi- Rev. and Mrs Averill. Mr J. Neate was the M.C. for the dance, and the music was supplied gratuitously by Mrs Barriball’s orchestra. - Members of the Turua Cricket Club farewelled their .captain, the Rev. W. W. Averill, on Saturday last. Mr R. D. Macklow, on behalf of the president (Mr J. Mules), who was unable to be present, expressed the thanks of mejmbers ( for all that Mr and M'rs Aevrill had done for cricket in Turua. Mr Averill had formed the club and had coached the players so that the team now had a fair chance of winning the competition. Mrs Averill had been of great assistance in caring for the To mark the appreciation of members Mrs Averill was ashed to accept a cut-glass salad bowl. The Rev. Averill responded, thanking the members fpr their kind thought. He urged players to carry on as in the past and play the game for the game’s sake.
