After being silent since December 20, 1927, the bell at the. Paeroa Dis)trict High School rang out a warning this morning. At am ejarly hour many parents were up and about, bustling round to get their children ready for, school. School bags and books had to be hunted up, Johnny’s hat found, and also Susie’s sandals. For some children this, morning was an epochmarking event in their young, lives, as. they were attending their first day at school. Older and more sophisticated children were to be seen in the streets, some; loitering along, others walking, briskly, but all making in the same direction for school.
A first offender, who was, charged with drunkenness at Paeroa on Friday might, was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 3s, by Mr F. E. Flatt, J.P., at the local Police Court on Saturday morning.
With the exception of a light shower of rain on Monday morning the, week-end was fine locally. Mon-, day, being Anniversary Day, was observed as a close holiday at PaerOa. The chief attractions were the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis tourna" meat, and a progressive pairs tournament at the local bowling green.
The Paeroa Defence Rifle Club held another practice shoot at thej range on Saturday afternoon, when about a .dozen members attended, and fired frpm the 3'oo and 500 yards range. On Saturday next the Waihi club is to visit Paeroa, when an inter-club match is to be fired. A challenge has also been received. from the Thames Club, and a match is to be arranged at an early date.
While; assisting tpi unload cargo at' the Ngahina wharf, Paerda, on Monday morning, an able seaman on the steamer Taniwha named Alfred Hansen was ’injured. It appears that a. sling of cargo was being lifted from the hold, when Hansen went forw.ard to make, some adjustment, and just as he did so a cask of vinegar slipped out and crushed him. Dr. Smith was sent for, and his examination disclosed that no bones were broken, but a severe bruising was sustained. Hansen, was, put to bed on the steamer and conveyed to his home at Auckland.
The drivers of some of the service ears passing through Ngatea daily have taken to washing their vehicles at one of the local garages, Ngatea. being the only place where the use of a iho.se for car washing is not prohibited at the present time.
