THAMES VALLEY TOURNAMENT. A SUCCESSFUL UNDERTAKING. Commencing at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning last, the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association held its inaugural tournament on the Paeroa Courts. Widespread interest was taken in the tournament, which was one of the largest undertaken in the district, and splendid entries) were received from tlie affiliated clubs. AS a result of the association’s activities a. great impetus has been given tennis, and next season’s tournament is already being keenly looked forward to.
The seven grass courts were in splendid playing condition, while the environs showed that much time and labour had been spent by the members. The result of their efforts was keenly appreciated, and many laudatory remarks were accorded the Paeroa club.. As tournament secretary Mr D. G. McMillan had a busy time, but he discharged his arduous duties with distinct credit. A word of praise is also due to the membersi of the committee for the way they handled matters, which worked with almost clock-like precision. Both players, and spectators paid generous tribute to the .work of the members and spoke highly of the arrangements made.
From the experience gained and by the entries received the association intends to consider holding annual championships and handicaps, separately. This will not only tend to increase the number of entries, but the two tournaments will be held in different parts of. the association’s territory.
On Monday morning there was a light shower of rain, and 1 prospects for playing dfd not look too good for awhile. However, the weather was fine from about 10-30 o’clock onward, and once the courts dried sufficiently 1 the games’went on without interruption until nearly dark. A large crowd of spectators gathered on Monday afternoon, wheji the handicap finals were played. Unfortunately, with the, exception of the men’s doubles, which were won by Dr. Gray and S.
