PAEROA WATER SUPPLY.
BtSBBVOIB BELOW IWBMAL.
NEED TO CONSERVE SUPPLY.
Until Monday last the water consumers in the borough, of Paeroa had not been compelled to restrict their requirements of water for either domestic or garden purposes. However, with the continuation of. the prolonged spell of dry weather the position has become more serious, and a drastic curtailment is now deemed necessary in; the Interests of all concerned. Following on the statement made by the deputy-Mayor E. Edwards) at the Borough meeting on Thursday night last, that the then existing conditions indicated that restrictions on the use of water were unnecessary, it is evident that a too liberal use of garden hoses has been made, and at the present time more water is be : ng used than is running into the reservoir.
An inspection, of. the headworks was made on Monday night by the deputyMayor, and in an interview yesterday afternoon Cr. Edwards stated that the water : n the reservoir was a good two feet lower than when inspected about a week previously. The fact that the water was not gaining during the night, when the Railway Department does not draw thousands of gallons as it does during the day, points to the fact that .hoses are being far toa extensively used. The position now is „such. that the Borough Council is fogged to compel consumers to discontinue the use of garden hoses.
. The present position; also indicates that the supply is essentially a domestic cine, and drastic action will be taken against persons who, in any form are not making an honest endeavour to conserve the supply. As the controlling authority the Qhinemuri County Council h’as carried out a daily inspector of the headworks for same time past. Careful, gauging of Tarariki Creek, which flows d'rectly into the reservoir, has been made,, and Ivithin the last 24 hours it has been found that the supply to the reservoir is noticeably failing. As from last night the supply from the main reservoir has been cut off and a limited supply of. water is being drawn from the old dam. After careful observation this step has been considered, necessary in order that the main, reservoir can increase in depth during the night. There is no desire on the part of the authorities to create anything in the nature of a. panic, but, being a.domestic water supply only, conservation is imperative, and the co-opera-tion of all consumers is earnestly sought.
